Diachronic Perspectives on Public Communication during Three Pandemics (Research Council of Finland)
Sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics
LanCris project’s first research article has now been published! @hannalimatius & @MeKriKo investigated the communicative choices made in authorities’ COVID-19 communication in the U.S. from the perspective of Rhetorical Arena Theory. https://t.co/SLd1FqsW6z
Limatius and Koskela show how crisis communication consists of several different voices (of e.g, politicians, experts, & the media) with various rhetorical aims. Ultimately, these different voices are strategically harnessed by the government to advance their communicative goals.
Researching #crisiscommunication? Then this workshop might be for you! Our project will organize a workshop on crisis communication at the VAKKI-symposium in February. The description is only in Finnish, but presentations in English are also welcome! https://t.co/vo03ga1F6q
LanCris-projekti mukana Kielitieteen päivillä 2024! @hannalimatius ja @jenni_raikkonen esittelevät projektin tutkimusta keskiviikkona 8.5. klo 13. Miten Yhdysvaltojen ja Iso-Britannian kansallisidentiteettiä on nostettu esiin näiden maiden virallisissa koronatiedotteissa?
New post on our research blog! Some insights from a conference presentation by project member @hannalimatius and our collaborator @MeKriKo https://t.co/DKohd0rInV

Research demonstrates that when people feel anxious, they tend to seek out information to resolve this feeling.
-> Anxiety-fueled searching can be biased; that is, people select information, especially on the Internet, that conforms to their priors. 4/
Interesting presentations in the "(Post)pandemic and health discourses" session at #ADDA4 with topics such as post-pandemic sustainability discourse in the tourism industry (Maria Christina Paganoni), & evaluative images of the COVID-19 pandemic in newsheadlines (Jenna Saarni)!
On this account, the project members from @helsinkiuni , @MinnaNevala @hannalimatius & @jenni_raikkonen share news, results and updates about the project. We hope you'll give us a follow if you're interested in the topic! 6/6
Funded by @SuomenAkatemia , our research project ‘Languaging Crises: Diachronic Perspectives on Public Communication during Three Pandemics’ focuses on public communication in the United Kingdom and the United States during the tuberculosis, Spanish flu and COVID-19 pandemics. 1/
Through this research, we can better understand the linguistic and communicative choices involved in public crisis communication. This is helpful, for example, when planning how to communicate information efficiently in different contexts and to different groups of people. 5/
