@jskdn We had an Stakeholders and Expert Subcommittee co-chaired by Cynthia Farrar and Oliver Hart working with the Connecticut Conference on Municipalities folks to come up with a list of experts and docs.

And last half of the final plenary was devoted to self-governance and voting on 5 motions. This one below failed by a few votes after an interesting back and forth weighing consideration for minorities, whether or not consensus is the point, and efficiency of decision-making ["CGC" stands for Citizen Governance Committee]

I was informed that 97 citizens made it today (remember 103 were expected the day before our first session). The incomparable Sulekha Kishore from @MIT and our AI-person on the Assembly just presented the public input we got since May through both online platforms (via @Make_org_Global and Ideas for Change (formerly https://t.co/HIk8RfA9rV).

@MayorElicker tackling another tough equity question in the breakout room on tax exemptions. 52% of the property in New Haven is tax-exempt. Who is actually paying to support the work of these non-profits, including @Yale ?

Excited for the third session of our Connecticut Citizens' Assembly on Property Taxes, a virtual 4-hour session that started off this morning at 9am with happy greetings from the 100 to each other and the team, warnings about pets and kids wandering on screen, and jokes about the cheap music background of our Zoom meeting. The mood is both playful and determined. After the 7-strong Citizen Governance Committee gave an account of the decisions they made on behalf of the larger group last time, we move on to a presentation on fiscal guardrails and state investment controls.

Helene Landemore articulates an issue that I see as both urgent and imperative: AI decision-making frameworks desperately need public input to be durable or legitimate. She ends with a direct call to action for frontier AI lab leaders. I agree that labs need to be the first movers here, and we have the capacity to make significant, even if imperfect, moves right now in this direction.

Thanks @bakkermichiel! As I mention in the essay, tier 1 grew directly out of the idea you raised at the Superintelligence conference in March. Your point about institutional independence and lab entrenchment is exactly the next thing to work out. I would be keen to explore these questions with you, this group, and anyone willing to contribute.
