@Mgck1025 Talking to neighbors is good. A tenant union is ideal.
It’s good to know how the landlord interacts with your neighbors because it could indicate how they will with you later on. But regardless of who you’re talking to, keep your private business to yourself.
Something I wish all tenants knew:
The landlord’s employees are NOT your friends.
Too many times a tenant is completely shocked that the super or building manager appears to testify against them in an eviction case—same one they been chatting up for years.
Hi, have you signed up for Allegheny County Council's special hearing tomorrow on @ACE_Fitzgerald, @PNCBank & other generational wealth launderers' plans to close the Smithfield St. Homeless Shelter?
You have 'til 6 today. And we need you: https://t.co/O76hBiNHLN
I went down to Smithfield shelter after the JOB hearing with some people in county council. There is a public hearing this Thursday at the courthouse to try and save the shelter. Starts at 6pm. Please go if you can!
When we talk about the housing crisis, it’s important for people to be reminded that you can be kicked out of your lease even if you pay on time and abide by the conditions. This is a business example but it happens in residential ways as well.
The smoke choking New York is a painful reminder that the climate crisis does not affect us all equally. Today, there are tens of thousands of unhoused and housing-insecure New Yorkers who have no choice but to breathe the deadly air for 24 hours. (1/3)
Statement on @ACE_Fitzgerald's plan to close the Smithfield St. homeless shelter, supported by @PointParkU, @ACDHS, @CulturalTrust, @visitpittsburgh, @alleghenyconf & other, corporate interests.
Your plan is to kill people. You know it & we know it.
We'll fight to stop this.
We can’t deny the intersections of labor organizing and the fight towards housing for all. However you celebrate today, remember those who fought for and fight for workers across the globe.
Utility issues are housing issues. Over 320,000 households in Pennsylvania had their utilities shutoff in 2022 due to nonpayment. Utility costs have continued to increase just like housing costs- wages have stayed the same. What are renters to do?
Housing is the infrastructure of racial capitalism. In this piece, edited by @povertyscholar for the Poverty & Race journal, @JWashingtonJDU and I make the case for the tenant union as our best chance to combat it. https://t.co/EhUYnsRumi
Tenants deserve to know how the Landlord-Tenant Officer operates, and how they are profiting off of violently removing neighbors from their homes!
On May 8th, @KendraPHL and I will shine a light on this opaque office.

L&I says it would take 60 more inspectors to do pro-active inspections of rental properties, but they only plan to hire 20 to fill vacancies. @CouncilmemberJG thank you for supporting pro-active inspections, will you push to fund L&I to hire 60 more code inspectors?
The Office is operated from Marisa Shuter’s private office on South Broad Street, further confusing soon-to-be-evicted tenants.

Prominent Philly eviction lawyer married to Municipal Court Judge 🧵:
Ryan Briggs, a reporter for @whyy , reported that Marisa Shuter, a court-appointed “Landlord and Tenant Officer” is married to Municipal Court Judge David C. Shuter, who presides over certain eviction cases.
Every eviction is violence and relying on a private system of wannabe-cops to enforce housing destabilization is beyond reprehensible. This is far from the first time an officer or landlord has tried to take the life of a tenant.
You can’t find a renter who doesn’t agree with the proposition that their landlord shouldn’t be able to raise their rent several hundred dollars a month and rip them from their home, their community, their church, their children’s school, everything.
A landlord-tenant officer shot a woman while trying to enforce an eviction on Wednesday morning in Philadelphia's Sharswood section.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital. Police did not immediately have a status on her condition. https://t.co/CikIcWoSO2
