Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
A devastating heat wave claimed more than 20,000 lives across Europe in a single week. Preliminary research estimates that from June 22 to June 28 around 20,390 individuals died due to heat related causes. Many areas recorded temperatures exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit or 40 degrees Celsius during this period.
The analysis relies on a statistical model rather than official counts and has not undergone peer review. It examines mortality patterns linked to temperature rises in over 900 European regions. France recorded the largest estimated impact with about 5,210 deaths. Germany followed with 4,543 Spain with 3,163 and Italy with 2,709.
Extreme heat poses a silent but severe threat. It exacerbates conditions such as heart disease stroke respiratory problems and dehydration. Older adults and those with preexisting health issues face heightened vulnerability. The study indicates that mortality rates climb sharply on days above 104 degrees Fahrenheit showing more than a 6 percent increase compared to milder conditions around 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Europe experiences faster warming than other continents at approximately twice the global rate. Climate change has made such intense heat waves far more probable. While nations have implemented measures like cooling centers and warning systems since the 2003 disaster experts note that adaptation faces growing challenges as temperatures rise further.
These figures come from a preliminary statistical assessment and may be revised with complete data. They nevertheless emphasize that extreme heat ranks among the most lethal weather events worldwide.

Models throwing out crazy temperatures of 48 and 49°C across France and 44 and 45C in the uk. Unlikely to happen but insane that it’s even a possibility now.
Such unprecedented temperatures would kill a lot of people in Europe.
❤️🔥Canicule 2 en approche ! ❤️🔥

Godzilla is coming. The tropical Pacific is warming at the fastest rate this century. A potential super El Niño is building — primed to disrupt global weather, intensify extremes, and push global temperatures to new highs.

Humans have emitted 2750 gigatons of CO2 since the industrial revolution from burning fossil fuels and land use change. To put this in perspective, this is more than the (dry) mass of all living things on earth and everything humans have ever built combined:
2009 world leaders at COP15, to FINALLY solve the climate crisis. They failed. 6 yrs later…COP21 gave us Paris Agreement. FINALLY we would solve the problem. 10 yrs later GHGs continue rising. Warming accelerates. 1.5C soon lost. We follow path to disaster. Not much to celebrate
