and I framed it around how I imagined Christmas was for people in Zennor Road in 1967. The working class families were certainly rough around the edges, although a strong moral code prevailed, and law and order won out at the end of the day. Or did it?

His pictures are a perfect time capsule of eccentric characters, kids playing innocently in the street and very few cars around. Kill the Midwife is probably the first story I’ve researched extensively. It’s also one of the stories I’ve enjoyed writing the most...

Research into my family tree gave me the idea. The Langs lived in Zennor Road in Balham, which was a run-down area of London. I discovered that life there was captured extensively by the photographer Paul Kaye in the 1960s...
