IBM just unveiled the world’s first sub-1nm chip technology 🔥
The chip packs nearly 100 billion transistors into an area the size of a fingernail, almost 2x the density of IBM’s 2nm chip announced in 2021.
Why it matters?
AI’s biggest bottleneck is still compute. If IBM can deliver this technology commercially within the next ~5 years, it could significantly improve performance per watt and lower the cost of training and running frontier AI models.
What’s interesting is that this comes just days after IBM partnered with OpenAI on enterprise cybersecurity AI. It seems OpenAI is serious about beating Anthropic on the eve of its IPO
The stock spiked 5% at one point, but a broader market downside wiped out all the gains. Look at this as a great discount on the stock!
We’ve designed and built our first AI chip: Jalapeño.
Designed from the ground up by OpenAI and brought to production with @Broadcom, Jalapeño is purpose-built for the LLM workloads powering ChatGPT, Codex, the API, and future agentic products.
Chips are foundational to the AI economy. Building our own expands our full-stack platform from products to models to infrastructure, and will help us scale intelligence, serve more people, and expand access to AI.
