In a Sunday School class in the early 1900s, someone raised criticism against Church leaders for allowing the Martin Handcart Company to cross the plains so late into 1856.

An old man in the corner of the class, Francis Webster, had enough and corrected the record.

He was part of the company himself, stood up and delivered the following quote:

“We suffered beyond anything you can imagine and many died of exposure and starvation, but did you ever hear a survivor of that company utter a word of criticism? Not one of that company ever apostatized or left the Church, because everyone of us came through with the absolute knowledge that God lives for we became acquainted with him in our extremities.

“I have pulled my handcart when I was so weak and weary from illness and lack of food that I could hardly put one foot ahead of the other. I have looked ahead and seen a patch of sand or a hill slope and I have said, I can go only that far and there I must give up, for I cannot pull the load through it.

“I have gone on to that sand and when I reached it, the cart began pushing me. I have looked back many times to see who was pushing my cart, but my eyes saw no one. I knew then that the angels of God were there.

“Was I sorry that I chose to come by handcart? No. Neither then nor any minute of my life since. The price we paid to become acquainted with God was a privilege to pay, and I am thankful that I was privileged to come in the Martin Handcart Company.”

Did you know that an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints rejected an opportunity to play Major League Baseball to serve a mission?

Elder Delbert L. Stapley served for nearly 30 years as an Apostle of Jesus Christ from 1950-1978.

A young Elder Stapley was 6'2" and was known as an elite athlete from Mesa, Arizona. After turning down an offer from an MLB team, he served a full-time mission in the Southern United States and served as a marine in World War I.

In his final conference talk, Elder Stapley taught, "Sometime in the eternities to come, we will see that our trials were calculated to cause us to turn to our Heavenly Father for strength and support. Any affliction or suffering we are called upon to bear may be directed to give us experience, refinement, and perfection."

NEW: The Treasury Department says it's stopped nearly $100 million in federal payments from going out to dead people thanks to a new fraud detection system rolled out under President Trump's executive order.

After Trump's signing, the Department of the Treasury and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service implemented a verification process that reviewed more than 885 million payments totaling approximately $2.77 trillion.

That screening flagged more than 4,900 payments totaling nearly $99 million that were associated with deceased individuals, returning the payments to the originating federal agencies for review before any funds were disbursed.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the department believes it could stop as much as $350 million in improper payments by the end of the year.

My mormons,

"You are not a member of an organization. You are a member of a people, and you forget the difference at your peril. An organization has employees and customers and a mission statement. A people has martyrs. A people has graves it can point to, ground soaked with its own blood, stories that begin with "your fathers" and mean it.

The world will tell you that Mormonism is a religion you happen to hold, a set of beliefs you could set down tomorrow and remain exactly who you are. The world is lying. You cannot separate the faith from the people who bled for it, because they were never two things.

The pioneer past is not the backstory of Mormonism. It is the body of it. Carthage is not history you learn. It is inheritance you carry. The handcart companies are not an episode in a manual. They are your dead, your line, your tribe, and the covenant that binds you to God binds you just as surely to them.

This is the thing the modern Saint has forgotten, and the forgetting is a kind of orphaning. We speak of "the pioneers" as though they were someone else's ancestors, figures in a diorama, a heritage month. They are not someone else's.

Whether your blood crossed the plains or your baptism grafted you into the vine last spring, they are yours now, fully yours, because that is what it means to be sealed into a covenant people: their story becomes your story, their martyrs become your martyrs, their dead become your dead.

The convert from Manila and the seventh-generation rancher from Cache Valley stand in the same line, heirs of the same graves.

Joseph and Hyrum did not die for an institution. They died for a people that did not fully exist yet, a people they could see only by faith, and you are that people.

Their blood is in your spiritual veins. When you take the sacrament, you take it as one of them. When you enter the temple, you enter on ground their sacrifice purchased. You cannot claim the gospel and disown the tribe that carried it, because the gospel came to you inside that tribe, wrapped in its stories, paid for with its suffering, handed down grave by grave until it reached your hands.

And a people who know they are a people cannot be broken the way scattered individuals can. This is why the world works so hard to convince you that your faith is private, personal, just one option in the marketplace of beliefs.

A lone believer can be picked off, worn down, embarrassed out of his convictions one awkward conversation at a time.

A member of a tribe with martyrs cannot, because he does not stand alone, and he knows it. He stands in a line that runs back through the valley and the plains and the frozen rivers to a jail in Illinois, and the line stands in him.

So claim your people. Say "my martyrs" and mean it. Say "my dead" and feel the weight of it.

Take your children to the graves of the pioneers and teach them that these are not strangers, these are ours, this is who we are and what we came from and what it cost.

Because the day you understand that you belong to a people, the mockery of the world loses its power over you entirely. They are laughing at your tribe. And your tribe buried its children in the snow and kept walking, and outlasted every mob and every extermination order and every laughing generation since.

You come from the unbreakable."

Apostolic Debut:

David A. Bednar | In the Strength of the Lord
October 2004

Elder Bednar is a rare example in that his first remarks at the General Conference pulpit were his first words to the Saints as an Apostle of Jesus Christ. At the time of his call, he was serving as the president of BYU–Idaho.

Elder Bednar's talk focuses on how we can rely on the Lord to make us strong. Jesus Christ IS our strength.

He starts his talk by noting, "my heart is filled to overflowing, my mind is spinning, my knees are weak and wobbly, and I find that words are totally inadequate to communicate effectively the feelings and thoughts I desire to share with you." He added he felt he was "one of the truly weak things of the world."

Despite this, Elder Bednar admits his strength is in the Lord. He quotes Paul's teaching that God chooses the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. He later quotes Ammon's declaration that God is his strength, followed by Enoch when the Lord reassured him that his mouth would be filled and he can fulfill the Lord's call.

Elder Bednar taught:

"In the strength of the Lord and through His grace, I know that you and I can be blessed to accomplish all things."

I'm a cardiologist. I watched @MegynKellyShow ask a question millions of women are living with — and nobody answered it.

She's on estrogen. It changed her life. But the progesterone she has to take to protect her uterus leaves her miserably bloated. Her doctors offered her an IUD she doesn't want. That was it. End of options.
That is not the end of her options. There are at least six. Here's every one of them.

First, why you need it at all. Estrogen stimulates the uterine lining. Unopposed, that raises endometrial cancer risk. Progesterone keeps it in check. If you have a uterus and take systemic estrogen, you need endometrial protection. That part is real. But how you get that protection has six versions — and most women are only ever offered one.
1. You may be on the wrong molecule. Synthetic progestins and micronized progesterone — the bioidentical form — are different drugs that feel completely different in the body. Women who feel awful on a synthetic often do fine on micronized. Ask for it by name.
2. Change the route. Vaginal micronized progesterone protects the uterus with far less circulating in your bloodstream — which means far less bloating, grogginess, and mood effect. Used off-label, well described, rarely offered.
3. Change the schedule. Daily continuous dosing is not the only regimen. Cyclic dosing — roughly 12 to 14 days a month instead of 30 — is long established and can cut side effects in half.
4. Change the hour. Oral micronized progesterone is sedating. Taken at bedtime, that stops being a side effect and becomes the reason you finally sleep through the night. Same drug. Different hour. Different life.
5. Local delivery. A levonorgestrel IUD protects the lining with minimal systemic exposure. Megyn doesn't want one — fair. But it's a real tool, not a consolation prize.
6. The option almost nobody mentions. There's a combination that pairs estrogen with a SERM instead of a progestogen — protecting the lining with no progesterone at all. Availability varies. Ask.
And if your only problem is dryness, burning, or painful sex: local vaginal estrogen requires no progesterone whatsoever. None. Millions of women suffer for years over a fear that was never justified.

Now the part the whole conversation missed: your bloating may not be the progesterone at all.

One of estrogen's jobs is holding water in tissue. Dose and route matter enormously. Here's my lane as a cardiologist — transdermal estradiol (patch, gel, spray) bypasses the liver. Compared to oral estrogen, it carries lower clot and stroke risk and tends to cause less fluid retention. Oral estrogen also raises SHBG, a protein that binds up your free testosterone — the exact hormone driving libido. So the fix may be switching your estrogen, not fighting your progesterone. Almost no one checks this.

Two more things women deserve to hear.
Testosterone. If you're on estrogen, sleeping better, feeling better — and still have zero libido, or can't get aroused despite loving your husband — low free testosterone is usually why. Women make testosterone too. Low-dose therapy, about a tenth of a male dose, improves desire, arousal, and orgasm in randomized trials. It is the single most overlooked piece of this entire conversation, and the one that quietly damages marriages.
Frozen shoulder. If you're between 42 and 58 and your shoulder mysteriously froze, that's adhesive capsulitis — and it clusters hard around menopause. Estrogen affects collagen and connective tissue. Most orthopedists never mention the hormonal link. Worth raising before anyone manipulates your shoulder under anesthesia.

And the context that changes everything:
In November 2025 the FDA began removing the black box warnings from hormone therapy — including vaginal estrogen — and finalized it this year. The FDA Commissioner called it one of the greatest screw-ups of modern medicine.
Why? The 2002 WHI was misread. In the estrogen-alone arm, breast cancer risk was actually lower. For women starting within 10 years of menopause or under 60, the risks are far smaller than anyone was told. Roughly 50 million women were frightened away from a treatment that relieves symptoms, protects bone, and gives them their life back.

Here's what I need you to take from this.
"Progesterone makes me bloated, so I guess I'm done" is not a medical answer. It's the answer you get from someone who only knows one regimen.
There are six. Screenshot this. Bring it to your appointment. Ask by name. And if your doctor shrugs, find a menopause-certified clinician — they exist, and the difference is night and day.
You were never supposed to just endure this.
You were supposed to be treated.
