Schools were a disaster this past week. Sick kids and teachers across the US (and beyond).
STOP accepting this as inevitable this time of year. Here are things schools, teachers, and parents can do to make next week (and next month) much different.
Cuz it's gonna get worse.

most profound advice from my first piano teacher: “take care of every note”
let no note go astray
let no note be ignored or trampled or stinted
grant every note, however seemingly subordinate, your attention
an ethics takes root in that injunction
By contrast, I love encountering work that is as *inelegant* as it is incisive, that embraces clumsiness and "cringe" and mess -- not as "critique" alone but also as a sort of honesty and inevitability.
I am always struck by critical disability studies/crip studies scholarship that, while very much about disabled experiences and crip ways of being, retains the vibe or "aesthetics" of the academic "cool kids" who want nothing to do with *irl* disability...

“this is precisely the time when artists go to work. there is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. we speak, we write, we do language. that is how civilizations heal.”

The sociology department at my university (The University of Manchester, UK) is hiring a Lecturer in Sociology focused on digital sociology. They are great people and you would work on the same campus where I work. 😁 https://t.co/yn28lddcTr
@DrSamiSchalk And a large number of the layoffs seem to be people that work directly with marginalized students. I don't know what we're going to do without those key leaders. Everything is extremely hard right now.
I took a sick day for mental health today. I'm being transparent about that with everyone in hopes that it encourages others to do the same. Take care of yourselves. None of this is easy.
To students: I'm here for you, too. You're the reason we care so much about what we do. My office will always be a safe space for you. I have snacks, fidgets, and stickers. You're also welcome to email me. You're never a problem or a burden.
I'm absolutely gutted beyond words for my friends and colleagues. UWO administration has failed its staff and students with these layoff decisions. It's clear that whomever made these cuts is completely ignorant of the student experience and functioning of departments.
I'm here in solidarity with my UWO community. To everyone who received terrible news the past few days: I am here for you in whatever capacity you need.
Let's all extend grace to one another as we are inevitably a little messy while navigating what is, frankly, a mess itself.
