🍄On October 9, 1988, Nintendo released ‘Super Mario Bros. 2’ for the NES in North America.
But here’s the twist: it wasn’t originally a Mario game!
Instead of releasing Japan’s notoriously difficult 1986 sequel (later known as ‘The Lost Levels’), Nintendo reworked the 1987 game ‘Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic’ with Mario characters.
Players could choose Mario, Luigi, Toad or Princess Toadstool. Instead of jumping on enemies, they could pick them up and throw them, along with using vegetables and other objects as weapons

BITE-SIZED FACT | The game was actually adapted from Nintendo's earlier Japanese title "Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic," with Mario characters replacing the original game's characters for the North American release. #80s
