A report from Saunders's News-Letter of the opening day of Trinity Term at the Four Courts in June 1808. The Lord Chancellor at the time was an Englishman, Thomas Manners, and his levee would have been held at his Dublin residence, 51 St Stephen's Green, now the Department of Justice. The swearing in of the Grand Jury was an important part of the first day of term in the Four Courts. Grand juries, made up of prominent local businessmen and gentry, performed an important function in determining whether there was sufficient evidence for criminal cases to proceed to full trial and also had significant local government functions.
