All for Norway, or a Norway for all?

I am not especially impressed by King Haakon’s speech. On the contrary. It doesn’t matter how many people, media personalities or politicians flatter his first appearance as king.

This is a king who spent his years as crown prince building a network of his own, a global political network, in anticipation of a supposedly non-political role at the head of Norway’s most traditional institution.

From 2005 he belonged to the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders. From 2010 to 2017 he sat on the board. Davos became a habit. Global Dignity. The UN Sustainable Development Goals. Oceans, climate, technology, “global redesign.” This is not a conspiracy. It is Haakon’s CV.

A king who for two decades has shuttled between the Palace and the rooms where elites meet to decide how the world should be governed over the heads of those who live in it.

And there he is, a day and a half after his father’s death, claiming the motto “Alt for Norge” (All for Norway). The same three words Haakon VII carried through the war. The same three words that meant: the nation, the people and the institution first. The will to lose everything so that Norway would remain Norway.

Then Haakon explains what it means to him. “All for Norway,” means fighting so that everyone in Norway shall have the chance to live a free life. A duty that we as a nation contribute positively in the world. And, a Norway with room for everyone.

There it is. Three words that were once a pledge to a people become a pledge to “everyone” and to “the world.” First, freedom for those already here. Then Norway’s obligation beyond its own borders. And room for everyone.

It might sounds beautiful, if you try. But its also precise enough to mean almost anything. For a king formed in Davos and the UN system, “room for everyone” is not a slogan, It is a line, and a political one at that. It is the same line that turns a small country into a moral platform and a people into a temporary host.

The question is not whether Haakon is pleasant, or whether he speaks well. The question is who “everyone” is, and what happens to Norway when the motto is stretched beyond the nation. A country that must have room for everyone sooner or later has no room left for itself.

I question whether or not he should reorganise his words to “Norway for all”.
