The idea that a 16-year-old is automatically a “child” is a modern social construct. This began changing about 150–200 years ago, accelerating during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Industrialization and expanding education increasingly kept girls in school and shifted those years toward education and wage work instead of early marriage, motherhood, and running a household. The modern concept of prolonged “adolescence” developed during this period.
