#SPANFALL: 112K words of fast-paced adult fantasy featuring dual opposing protagonists protecting a divine girl targeted by infernal forces. #amquerying
@texasrunnerDFW Gratuity. When I was growing up it was 10% for mediocre service, 15% for good. Local sales tax was 8%, so if you didn't want to math it you just doubled the tax and left that as a 16% tip.
Nowadays it seems anything less than 20% is an insult if the service wasn't godawful.
@SsempalaEd23472 Sort of. I have a couple flashback scenes that I scratched from my first book for the sake of word count, but I preserved them for possible inclusion in future books in the series.
@StevenTBoers63 Good question. Difficult to pull off in third person POV, but easier in first person when the narrator makes it clear from the start that they are telling someone else's story as they witnessed it. "Shawshank Redemption" comes to mind.
@vickyweberbooks I'd be interested in knowing what size writing sample you request with a query, how you settled on that number, and any insight into other agents' preferences.
@C_3C_3 How about something unpublished? A chosen one trope is at the heart of my novel, SPANFALL. I wrote something beautiful. I thought that was the hard part. All I wanted to do was share a heartfelt story with the world. Trad pub is a grind.
@MadelynKnecht Question: is it worth mentioning in a query letter that a protagonist is bisexual if it is implied but not explicitly stated in the book?
@ArienSkyeWrites How do you know they used AI? Is it the writing style of the review, or do they flat-out admit it? Genuinely curious, as I haven't gotten as far as a manuscript review, whether by man, machine, monster or miscellaneous.
@oliviamemerick Thank you for making yourself available this way. It's the most real-time feedback I've gotten from an agent since I started querying. Much appreciated ๐
@MadelynKnecht Interesting that I read this as I'm going over my newly revised query letter, shortened by 100+ words. I'm not real thrilled - I took out all mention of the primary antagonist and her master, for the sake of brevity. But 450 words wasn't doing me any favors, so I'll try this one.
@elonmusk I agree, but censoring the words "racist," "sexist," "retarded," and the phrase "dark as fuck" is exactly what the morally superior snowflakes do to prove they are too immature to have the conversation in the first place
@MalindaDetweil1 Querying.
I thought writing a book - a good one, and I'm damn proud of it - would be the hard part.
49 rejections later, I know better. Not a day passes without alternating between thinking I'm wasting my time when not querying... and thinking that querying IS the waste of time.
@SerenaDracis@MalindaDetweil1 Do you think minimal or zero support is typical in trad pub? Querying has been a nightmare and I'm starting to consider selfpub, but I'm not real confident in my marketing ability to go it alone.
