Walgreens has a flu shot tent outside and offered me the shot, and of course I said no thanks. Inside I was shopping and another sales associate walked up with an iPad and asked me if I wanted the flu shot. I said no thanks. Then the actual pharmacist walked up to me with and asked if I wanted the flu shot, and I said no thanks. Then when I paid and left, the pharmacist asked me “again” if I was sure and then asked me to tell my friends to come here to get the flu shot because there is a contest for Walgreens’ stores. Clarity on the Tillamook/halal discussion:
Tillamook didn't suddenly change its cheese to make it halal. It switched to fermentation-produced rennet back in 2016. In fact, most non-artisan American cheeses already use microbial/FPC enzymes compatible with halal requirements.

What changed is the marketing.

Tillamook says its cheeses had been “halal-friendly for years,” but it pursued certification as it began to focus on that demographic. Now that certification is being prominently communicated to consumers.

The formulation isn't the story. The decision to deliberately market halal certification to a growing Islamic consumer demographic is.

That's an entirely different ball of wax. And, a focus being promoted in US Advertising firms.
We should rightly be asking Ad giants why they are promoting a small segment of people!

Most people just want good cheese. They don’t want a branding lecture, a strategy session, or a marketing department trying to prove how enlightened the dairy aisle is.

Fine. Tillamook can chase whatever market it wants.

Americans can buy whatever cheese they want too.

Tillamook didn’t just slap a new symbol on the package.

The company changed its cheesemaking process years ago, switching to a vegetarian rennet that carries Halal certification. Today, Tillamook says the majority of its cheeses are Halal certified.

That was a deliberate business decision to make the product meet Islamic dietary standards.

They’re free to do it.

And I’m free to say I don’t like it one bit.

AN OPEN LETTER TO TILLAMOOK

@Tillamook,

I have purchased and enjoyed your products for years, which is why I was extremely disappointed to learn that the majority of your cheeses are now Halal certified.

As a Christian, I have deeply held religious convictions about the food I purchase and bring into my home. I respect that Muslim consumers may want Halal-certified products available to them, and I have absolutely no objection to grocery stores carrying Halal products or having dedicated Halal sections. People should be able to purchase food that aligns with their religious beliefs.

But my faith matters too. Because of my Christian convictions, I will not knowingly consume food that I believe has been prayed over, blessed in the name of another faith, or offered or sacrificed in connection with worship of any god other than the Lord and Savior I believe in.

I should have the same freedom to make that choice.

When a major mainstream brand chooses to place religious certification across a large portion of its regular product line, my choice becomes whether to accept that certification or stop purchasing those products. For me, the answer is simple. I will choose another brand.

I would encourage Tillamook to consider consumers of other faiths when making decisions like this and to make religious certification clear and transparent so every customer can make an informed choice according to his or her own conscience.

AND THIS IS ALSO A MESSAGE TO EVERY OTHER MAJOR FOOD BRAND WATCHING THIS TREND: If you choose to put Halal certification across your regular product lines rather than offering Halal-certified alternatives, understand that some Christian consumers will respond by no longer purchasing those products. If you put it across your entire brand, I WILL BOYCOTT the entire brand.

I also encourage major grocery stores to consider dedicated Halal sections, just as they have Kosher and international sections, rather than integrating Halal-certified products throughout the store. Give everyone a clear choice.

Muslim consumers have the right to choose Halal.

Christian consumers have the right to choose not to.

That choice deserves respect too!
