Today, with England attacking in a 3-1-6, it's a good opportunity to explain the difference between Tuchel's and Nagelsmann's approaches, even though they may use the same formation.

Tuchel prefers to progress through the wide areas, whereas Nagelsmann looks to progress through central combinations.

Look at England's wingers: they mainly do three things: take on the full-back 1v1, cross towards the far post, or recycle possession. You rarely see them playing diagonal passes into central areas, even though they often play with inverted wingers, which naturally creates those passing angles.

Nagelsmann, on the other hand, constantly looks for those inside diagonals and quick combinations through the middle. He's more willing to take risks with one-twos and line-breaking passes.

Germany are more entertaining to watch because of these combinations, but they also leave themselves far more exposed in defensive transitions.

England are less exciting in possession, but their approach offers greater protection against counter-attacks.

Nagelsmann's attacking principles remind me more of Hansi Flick's, while Tuchel's are closer to Arteta's.

Germany are more fun to watch. England seems more effective.

La experiencia de Marcelo Bielsa en Uruguay deja una enseñanza que va mucho más allá de los resultados. Desde su llegada intentó cambiar la identidad de un equipo históricamente asociado a un fútbol de fricción y duelos físicos, para convertirlo en uno protagonista, ofensivo y capaz de jugar con la pelota al piso.

Pero el proceso encontró resistencias. Los jugadores cuestionaron sus métodos y el nivel de exigencia, mientras que Bielsa tomó decisiones fuertes al apartar a referentes que consideraba incompatibles con su idea de juego. El propio entrenador reconoció que no había logrado cambiarles la mentalidad y asumió su responsabilidad.

Sin embargo, las transformaciones nunca dependen de una sola persona. Un entrenador puede proponer un camino, pero necesita jugadores dispuestos a recorrerlo. Y el fútbol que pregona Bielsa exige algo fundamental: futbolistas inteligentes. No alcanza con correr y meter. Hace falta entender espacios, interpretar movimientos, tomar decisiones rápidas y animarse a abandonar hábitos profundamente arraigados.

También es cierto que la personalidad de Bielsa nunca terminó de generar la confianza y la cercanía necesarias para sostener un cambio tan profundo. Ese, probablemente, sea su gran defecto: muchas veces sus ideas convencen más que sus formas, y construir una revolución cultural también exige crear vínculos y lograr que los futbolistas se sientan parte del proceso.

El gran desafío en Uruguay no fue táctico ni físico, sino cultural. Bielsa intentó modificar una manera de entender el fútbol y se encontró con un grupo que, en gran medida, no estuvo dispuesto a sostener ese cambio.

Las revoluciones futbolísticas necesitan de un entrenador convencido, pero también de jugadores inteligentes, abiertos al aprendizaje y comprometidos con una nueva idea. Sin esa combinación, cualquier transformación queda a mitad de camino.

Less than five years ago, Sunderland were in League One.

It all started from that takeover by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

Louis-Dreyfus is 29, and took over Sunderland when he was only 24. His parents used to be the owners of Olympique Marseille.

He is young but has the right vision for owning a football club.

They’ve been through failures and successes. Playoffs losses and wins.

At the beginning of the Premier League season, Louis-Dreyfus said the consensus by many teams in the Premier League is that they were going to finish last.

“It was their honest perception and I wouldn’t blame them. If you finish fourth in the Championship, 25 points behind the top two and come up later than everyone else, it was natural for them to think, ‘Well done for getting here, enjoy it, but you will probably go back down and you might come back up and be that sort of club’.

“This was basically the challenge for us, to break the cycle of all these promoted teams who have gone straight back down, sometimes with very few points,” he said.

“We take it game by game and every win and draw gets us closer to survival. And we absolutely need to plan for all eventualities.”

Sunderland’s recruitment was top notch. Their manager, Regis Le Bris was hired in 2024 and he helped promote them. He has a doctorate in Sports Psychology and Biomechanics.

That knowledge, combined with strong recruitment provided by their young Sporting Director has given Sunderland a push. They scoured Europe for young, good footballers.

Perhaps their most important signing was former Arsenal captain, Granit Xhaka, and their aspiration was humility.

Survive the Premier League, and see what becomes of that.

Con todo el respeto que se merece el gran Maurizio Sarri (porque este sí lo merece hoy por hoy) no me cabe en la cabeza como en una liga con entrenadores como Fabio Grosso, Daniele De Rossi, Cesc Fábregas, Vincenzo Italiano, Fabio Pisacane o incluso Di Francesco, el círculo: Sarri-Conte-Spalletti-Allegri- Pioli se repita tantísimo sin motivos reales para ello en muchos casos.

Soy yo el Napoli y estoy tirando la puerta abajo de cualquiera de esos 6 que he comentado porque, salvo en el caso de Di Francesco que es un caso muy concreto, tienen ideas más frescas y efectivas (demostrado este año).

La rotación de entrenadores del top 7 de la Serie A es un círculo vicioso tremendamente nocivo que impide crear proyectos estables.
