A giant ridge of high pressure will remain parked over the region Sunday, which means another day of hot weather, scattered storms along and west of the Continental Divide and critically elevated levels of #Swoob, #Swass, #Swesticles, #Thelcro and #Swulva.

Here’s your Sunday breakdown:

🔥 EAST OF THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE

Mostly sunny, mostly dry and increasingly offensive.

Highs will reach the upper 90s along much of the I-25 corridor, including around 98° in Denver and near 100° around Greeley. Colorado Springs should reach the lower 90s, Pueblo the upper 90s, with more widespread upper 90s and isolated triple digits across the eastern plains. Hottest up in Nebrasky.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for the Denver metro area and portions of the I-25 corridor from 10 a.m. Sunday through 9 p.m. Monday.

Thunderstorm chances across the Front Range and eastern plains will be extremely limited Sunday. Most of us will spend the day baking beneath the giant atmospheric heat lamp without receiving a pity sprinkle.

⛰️ MOUNTAINS AND WESTERN COLORADO

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will redevelop during the afternoon, especially along and west of the Continental Divide.

Storm coverage will not be identical everywhere. Portions of the central and western mountains remain juicier, while the eastern mountains and southern Colorado will experience more isolated activity.

The primary hazards will be frequent lightning, localized heavy rain, small hail and gusty outflow winds between 35 and 45 mph.

Heavy rain may produce flash flooding or debris flows over burn scars and other vulnerable terrain. These storms can develop quickly, so please keep a way to receive warnings if you’re camping, hiking, recreating or living downstream from a recent fire.

I’m not trying to scare you. I’m setting proper expectations because flash flooding does not care how cute your camping setup is.

🌡️ SOUTHEAST WYOMING, WESTERN NEBRASKY AND WESTERN KANSAS

Hot, mostly dry and occasionally breezy conditions continue.

Cheyenne should reach the lower 90s, with widespread 90s and a few lower 100s possible across the lower elevations of southeast Wyoming and western Nebrasky. Heat Advisories are in effect for portions of both areas Sunday into Monday.

A few showers or storms may develop over the higher terrain west of the Laramie Range before drifting toward the adjacent plains, but coverage should remain limited.

Western Kansas will also remain mostly dry with temperatures climbing well into the 90s.

🔮 WHAT’S NEXT?

Monday may be the hottest day of this entire stretch.

Upper 90s and lower 100s will become more widespread, with portions of southeastern Colorado potentially reaching 100° to 105°. #LeGagMe #SweatiusMaximus

The good news is that a pattern change remains on track beginning Tuesday. A cold front and deeper monsoon moisture will gradually increase shower and thunderstorm coverage.

Wednesday and Thursday currently appear to offer the best opportunity for more widespread rain across the Front Range and eastern plains.

That additional moisture should provide some temperature relief, but it will also increase the risk of locally heavy rain and flash flooding, especially over burn scars and beneath slower moving storms.

So yes, meaningful rain chances are coming.

Another reminder that Utah’s monsoon is far from over.

This video was taken yesterday at North Creek in Beaver, where heavy rain over the Cottonwood Fire burn scar sent a dangerous debris flow rushing downstream. You can see the mud, rocks, trees, and other debris being carried by the flood.

Burn scars are especially dangerous during monsoon season because the scorched ground can’t absorb water like it normally would. Even a brief downpour can trigger life-threatening flash flooding and debris flows.

If you’re recreating near recent wildfire burn scars, stay weather aware and never underestimate these storms. They can turn deadly in a matter of minutes.
