It just worked out that we could record the live album here in El Paso. I have friends who have a recording company and my film crew who do all my music videos. They worked together to record and film it!
I have a whole notebook of lyrics that I have written. But this is one of my problems. I am afraid to go, "Okay, guys. Three hits. Here they are." But I'm coming out of it. I'm a better singer than the guys I work with, but they are better songwriters than I am. So we'll see.
In terms of finding the right backup singer, there's got to be a certain soul about their voice, how they layer with your voice, and how they harmonize with the key that you're singing in. Some people just have that ear. Teresa James is one.
When you're singing a ballad and the audience is silent, or when you're doing a really upbeat, funky song and you can see people groovin', you know you have them.
I know my limitations and I know my strengths. I can listen to recordings and know when I have done my best. "I can hit that note; I can't hit it any higher." I don't kid myself.
The musicians I have performed and recorded with are all amazing musicians. I love and admire them. I'm so fortunate and humbled to have the opportunity to work with them.
"What helps keep you centered?"
I think my home, my husband, my dogs. My love of my friends. My love of cooking and family. That's what keeps you centered. That's really what is meaningful.
