We are proud to share that the FUELGAE project was represented at the 15th Panhellenic Scientific Chemical Engineering Conference (#PESXM15), held at the Technical University of Crete in Chania, Greece (3–5 June 2026).
Gathering between 200–400 researchers, academics, industry representatives and students, PESXM15 is one of the most important scientific events for the Greek chemical engineering community — a space where ideas on energy, sustainability and environmental technologies come to life.
🎤 Liakos Dimitrios, researcher at #CPERI/CERTH, delivered an oral presentation on behalf of FUELGAE:

The talk showcased preliminary results on product yields, carbon distribution and biocrude characterization, underlining the remarkable potential of Nannochloropsis microalgae as a sustainable feedstock for renewable fuel production through Hydrothermal Liquefaction (#HTL).

La bioenergía como pilar estratégico: el futuro del transporte y la industria en Europa 🌍
Los recientes acontecimientos geopolíticos nos recuerdan constantemente la vulnerabilidad de Europa ante la dependencia de los combustibles fósiles importados. Aunque la electrificación avanza, sectores clave como el transporte y la calefacción siguen estando muy rezagados.
Por eso, la Junta Directiva de @bioenergyEU ha enviado una carta formal a la presidenta de la Comisión Europea, Ursula von der Leyen, con peticiones claras para acelerar la transición:
¿Cómo impacta esto al sector del transporte y a la industria?
🔄Complemento clave a la electrificación: La bioenergía llega allí donde la electrificación directa todavía encuentra limitaciones técnicas o económicas.
✈️🛻Descarbonización de sectores difíciles: Es fundamental para desarrollar soluciones en el transporte pesado y combustibles sostenibles para la aviación.
🛡️Seguridad y resiliencia: El 96,4% de las materias primas de biomasa se producen dentro de Europa. Apostar por el sector es apostar por la independencia energética.
✔️Soluciones inmediatas: Se solicita a la Comisión un despliegue acelerado y un marco regulatorio estable que permita inversiones a largo plazo en transporte e industria.
La bioenergía sostenible no es una promesa de futuro; es una solución probada, disponible y escalable hoy mismo. Para mantener la competitividad industrial y cumplir los objetivos climáticos, Europa debe integrar plenamente la biomasa en su hoja de ruta. 🇪🇺

🚀 Strengthening EU Industrial Leadership in bioSAF: New EBB Position Paper
The EBB European Biodiesel Board (EBB) has officially released its policy priorities to accelerate investment and scale up production for bio-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel (bioSAF) in the EU.
The EBB is calling for critical improvements to the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation to ensure investment certainty and long-term competitiveness.
Key takeaways from their position:
📈 Smoothing the Mandate Trajectory Current 5-year leaps (e.g., from 6% to 20%) don’t align with industrial realities. They propose a predictable, incremental annual trajectory to create a smoother investable curve for both producers and airlines without lowering overall ambition.
💡 Flexibility & Mechanism Improvements To support uptake, EBB advocate for a ‘SAF surplus and pre-fulfilment' mechanism and a strategic use of EU ETS revenues to be reinvested back into the European aviation sector.
🌱 Solving the Feedstock Paradox While targets are rising, feedstock eligibility rules have become a complex patchwork. The European Biodiesel Board urge the EU to stick to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) as the sole regulatory reference for sustainability and eligibility criteria.
EBB concludes, we must maintain the ambition of EU aviation decarbonisation while ensuring the industrial framework supports those building the capacity to deliver it.

This policy shift reinforces the strategic value of FUELGAE, as the EBB’s push for a stable SAF trajectory and streamlined feedstock rules provides the essential regulatory certainty to transition algal-based fuels from the lab to a guaranteed commercial market.

The BIOCTANE Training School 2026 on Heterogeneous Catalysis & Waste-to-SAF Pathways is just around the corner!
On 28–29 April 2026, researchers, industry experts, and early-career scientists will gather at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos for two days of exchange on thermochemical conversion, advanced catalytic materials such as Zeolites 4.0, and pathways towards low-carbon transport fuels.
We are pleased to share that Dr. José Miguel Campos from @CSIC, Principal Investigator in the #FUELGAE project, will participate in this event, contributing to knowledge exchange and dissemination activities in the field of sustainable aviation fuels.
