Race Relations and Mixed-Race Issues

I spoke to a mother at the bus stop as we dropped our kids for the school bus. She was very upset. She is half Nigerian and half German. At work a colleague came in from a job and had dirt on their clothes, hand and face and an older colleague said 'hey, he looks just like you'. She said she collapsed inside.

The older colleague is from a different generation. He's 63. He thought is was a good joke but she was very hurt because he obviously meant the colleague's dirty skin made him look brown 'like her' meaning she is dirty looking. She went home, felt terrible for two days and came back and said to him that it hurt her and she felt it was racist - intentional or unintentional. He got defensive and dismissive because he felt he was just joking. She felt worse and went to her boss who mediated and the older colleague eventually gave a dismissive and empty apology. Her boss and his wife made her a nice gift basket and handwritten note and went the extra distance to make sure she felt included. Now it's awkward at work between her and the colleague - it's a small office - and she's thinking about leaving for the sake of her mental health.

She is a very rational person. She understands that race is complicated and understands that immigration is out of control so it's going to push people into different camps as leaders don't care about race relations, just getting enough low-wage workers into factories. But her case is one that causes me great concern for the future.

She was born in Germany to a German mother and an African father. She is German but looks like a visible minority. This is the same for Turks and other groups who are more than one generation here. She told me a story I've heard countless times before. When she was young she went to Nigeria and when she was there she was a novelty. People would comment about 'the white family'. But in Germany she is African. When I did my doctorate in a high-migration, low-income part of Ulm, Germany I interviewed dozens of people, and time and again those visible minorities who were in Germany more than one generation (and especially Turks of whom there was a large concentration) said how they struggled with their identity - they felt like they weren't accepted in Germany or in the homeland of their parents. In Germany, they were Turkish, in Turkey they were German. It should be pointed out that many of these had no experience of discrimination or negative comments and this lack of acceptance was a projection they put onto themselves.

This is a real issue. If tomorrow Germans decided that they didn't like Irish people, no problem. I can go home. My kids will integrate seamlessly in Ireland their kids will be Irish. But for mixed-race people, there is no home to go to if they feel unwelcome. A bigger issue is that even where they are made to feel welcome, they still, often, feel like outsiders. They are visibly different looking from everyone else and depending and if their parents haven't made them aware of the dynamics at play and toughened them up mentally to let the small things slide, they will end up taking offence at what has become known as 'microaggressions'. I have, sadly, rarely encountered someone of mixed-race background who is secure of their place in the world.

In a time and place where migration is controlled and leaders are responsible and have a high-status migrant first policy in place, then a mixed-race person will be seen in a positive way, as exotic. But when borders are left wide open, low status and illegal migrants are brought in en masse and politicians gaslight the public on issues of serious migrant crime and a breakdown of social cohesion, then race tensions increase and mixed-race people get lumped in with the outsiders. Leading back to the issue, the new migrant can go home if things get too hot, but the mixed-race person cannot.

It isn't good enough that western governments force these tensions so flippantly. Every generation thinks that they are enlightened and don't see colour etc. but that isn't reality. People are tribal and while any tribe can be flexible and capable of assimilating some outsiders, when numbers of outsiders reach the level of a perceived threat, then tribal instincts will kick in and when that happens, mixed-race people find themselves homeless.

Unfortunately, thanks to feckless politicians and their greedy industrialist cronies, things are destined to get worse.
