In a village near Bamyan, Afghanistan, I met this young girl outside her family’s home, wrapped in an American flag.

Her parents told me that U.S. soldiers had given it to her before they left Afghanistan. She didn’t know it was the American flag, or what it represented. She simply liked its colors.

Since then, she had made it her own, wearing it as a hijab or wrapping herself in it to keep warm.

To her, it wasn’t a symbol of a country or a war. It was simply something colorful she liked to wear.
