Actionable items that can ensure a healthy life; reduce the risk of serious diseases and increase lifespan
1. Sleep for 7-8 hours every night
2. Go to bed at the same time every time (+/- 30 minutes)
3. Avoid oversleeping (defined as sleeping for >9 hours)
4. Have dinner 3-4 hours before sleeping time
5. If you prefer daytime napping, do it for <30 min (daytime napping is not a must for those below 60)
6. If you snore at nights, it could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea- get evaluated and treated
7. Don’t prefer jobs that require you to routinely work at nights or have shift duties
8. Take up jobs that have reasonable working hours (8-9 hours/day). Avoid overworking.
9. Go for brisk walking or running (30-40 min daily). Any other aerobic exercise is also fine.
10. Try to walk for 5-10 min after every meal, especially if you are overweight, or prediabetic or diabetic
11. Take a few minutes walking beak every 30-60 min, if your job requires you to sit for >6 hours
12. Do resistance/weight training to strengthen your muscles (at least three times a week)
13. Avoid sugar, ultra processed packaged foods, soft drinks and fruit juices
14. Increase dietary intake of protein-rich foods (fish, poultry, eggs, paneer, etc.)
15. Incorporate multiple helpings of fresh whole fruits and vegetables
16. Include a handful of nuts (per day) in your diet
17. Avoid smoking or tobacco chewing
18. Avoid consuming alcohol (no amount of alcohol is safe)
19. Spend quality time with family and friends
20. Take regular vacations
21. Pursue a hobby, such as singing, painting, gardening, playing a musical instrument, etc.
22. Learn a new language (reduces the risk of dementia)
23. Go for annual health check ups
24. Take age-appropriate vaccinations (in consultation with your physician)
25. Follow your doctor’s advice
26. Buy adequate insurance- including medical and life insurance
27. Invest wisely and start at an early age. Equity is by far the best (disclaimer: consult a financial adviser)
28. Avoid taking loans, as much as possible; and definitely not for investing
