Building Young Minds That Understand Waste

LAWMA Academy visited ALKEM in Amuwo-Odofin to educate young children on proper waste management and the importance of taking care of their environment.

Through engaging and practical learning, the children were introduced to simple waste management practices, including proper disposal, waste segregation and keeping their surroundings clean.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Zoomlion, Mrs. Habiba Abubakar, said that the MRF development was a major milestone in strengthening public-private collaboration in sustainable waste management, noting that Zoomlion remained committed to supporting Lagos State in achieving its circular economy objectives through innovation and technical expertise.

Stakeholders led by the Abowa of Agbowa-Ikosi, Oba Owolabi Monson, and the Baale of Igoro Erekiti community, Chief Kayode Abila, gave their nod to the project, while calling for its speedy completion and increased government presence in their localities.

The engagement brought together traditional rulers, community leaders and other representatives of the host communities, including the Vice Chairman, Badagry Local Government, Hon. Hakeem Adeyemi
to promote understanding of the projects, address concerns and foster community participation in the developments.

LASG ADVANCES CIRCULAR ECONOMY AGENDA, ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS ON MRF PROJECTS

The Lagos State Government has taken a further step towards advancing its circular economy agenda with a stakeholders’ engagement on the proposed development of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in Erekiti, Badagry and Agbowa, Ikosi-Ejirin.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, who spoke at the meeting, held on Thursday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja
said that the development of MRFs was critical to transforming Lagos’ waste management system from a conventional collect-and-dispose model to one that treats waste as a resource and an avenue for wealth creation.

He explained that the proposed MRFs were being developed by the Lagos State Government in partnership with Zoomlion as part of efforts to strengthen waste recovery, promote resource utilisation and create economic opportunities within the State’s waste management value chain.

He stated that Lagos generated over 13,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily, stressing the need to expand the State’s capacity to recover, process and reuse valuable materials while reducing dependence on landfill disposal.

According to him, the proposed MRFs at Erekiti, Badagry, and Agbowa, Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA, were flagship Waste Management Improvement Projects, conceived under the Health and Environment pillar of the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

He added that the stakeholder engagement was aimed at providing host communities with a better understanding of modern MRF operations and securing their support and cooperation, noting that the projects were expected to create employment and skills development opportunities, particularly for youths and women, while improving environmental conditions.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Kamar Olowoshago, called for stakeholders’ collaboration for the successful execution of the initiative, including the enumeration of landed properties to be affected by the development, as he assured of the Bureau’s support in facilitating the necessary land-related processes.

The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, together with Zoomlion, presented the project brief, saying the proposed MRFs would strengthen Lagos’ waste recovery capacity as they represented an important step towards transitioning from a predominantly linear waste management model to a circular economy.

Gbadegesin explained that the facilities would promote waste segregation and recycling, reduce the volume of waste transported to landfills and facilitate the recovery of valuable materials for reintroduction into the production cycle.

"These facilities will support an integrated waste recovery value chain involving the receipt, sorting, processing and recovery of recyclable materials, including plastics, metals, paper and organic materials, for reuse and reintegration into productive activities", he said.

He added that the MRFs would complement existing waste management infrastructure and support the State’s broader waste-to-wealth, waste-to-energy and resource recovery initiatives, thereby creating environmental, social and economic value from waste.

LAWMA SECURES ROTARACT, LEO CLUBS’ SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the support of the Rotaract Club of Ikoyi and Achiever Leo Club for its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable waste management, environmental consciousness and a circular economy across Lagos State.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by representatives of the clubs to the LAWMA Headquarters, Ijora-Olopa, on Friday, where the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin highlighted the Authority’s policies and initiatives aimed at transforming waste management and promoting responsible environmental practices across the State.

Dr. Gbadegesin explained that LAWMA was strengthening waste collection, resource recovery and recycling, while advancing innovative approaches to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and unlock the economic value of discarded materials.

He cited the proposed development of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) at strategic locations, including Badagry and Agbowa, as part of efforts to strengthen waste sorting, recycling and resource recovery, while also creating opportunities for sustainable economic activities within the waste management value chain.

The LAWMA boss also highlighted the LAWMA Academy as a strategic platform for building environmental consciousness among children and youths, noting that the initiative equipped young people with practical knowledge and skills in waste management, recycling and sustainable living.

He said that the Academy encouraged participants to see waste not merely as refuse, but as a valuable resource that could be creatively transformed into useful products and wealth-generating opportunities.

Demonstrating the impact of the initiative, Dr. Gbadegesin showcased innovative products made by LAWMA Academy interns from recyclable materials, noting that their creativity demonstrated the potential of recycling to promote environmental consciousness, nurture entrepreneurial skills and inspire young people to become advocates for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.

He welcomed the clubs’ interest in supporting LAWMA’s environmental agenda, stressing that achieving sustainable waste management required the collective efforts of government, private organisations, civil society groups, youth organisations and residents.

The representatives of the clubs, led by the President of Achiever Leo Club, Agboola Yussuf, and Vice President of Rotaract Club, Ikoyi, Olayori Fawaz, expressed appreciation to LAWMA Management for the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the Authority’s operations and sustainability initiatives.

They commended LAWMA’s efforts to promote responsible waste management, recycling and environmental sustainability across the State, and pledged their readiness to collaborate with the Authority on initiatives aimed at promoting environmental awareness and achieving a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

🚨 ONGOING: Environmental Compliance Enforcement at the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba Corridor

Today, our @Lawma_gov Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, working alongside @LAGESCOfficial (KAI) officials, OP MESA military personnel and the Nigeria Police, is carrying out another round of enforcement operations along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor, with shops being sealed over the indiscriminate disposal of waste on the road median.

📍The operation currently covers Modele Street, Fagbile Street and Maja Street, where persistent environmental sanitation violations continue despite sustained advocacy, repeated warnings and previous engagements. These enforcement actions are necessary to restore environmental order, protect public infrastructure and ensure compliance with Lagos State environmental laws.

🔒 The affected shops will remain sealed until the required sanitation standards are met and full compliance with environmental regulations is achieved.

Our objective remains compliance, not punishment. We urge all businesses and residents to patronise their assigned PSP operators, keep their surroundings clean and dispose of waste responsibly.

Waste Surveillance and Enforcement Update

As part of its sustained enforcement drive, LAWMA has arrested several environmental offenders for various infractions in different parts of the state.

The arrests, made through the combined efforts of LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, and other enforcement arms of Lagos State, led to the apprehension of Wasiu Sulaimon, Segun Abayomi, Pelumi Noah, Soliu Hamed, Abdu Muhammed, Kabir Muhammed, Monday Ogbu, Farouk Adamu, Muutar Yakubu and Lekan Abejo for illegal dumping of refuse while Destiny Bassey, Oluwakemi Sobowale, Stanley Otu and Ridwan Adisa were arrested for street trading and obstruction.

All the suspects and others arrested for miscreancy, including Josiah Umar, Jubril Salisu, Benjamin Dare, Isik Jalfa, and Mathew Alabi have been taken to the Lagos State Task Force Office, Oshodi, where they will be charged to court in accordance with the environmental laws of Lagos State.

LAWMA remains committed to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring that individuals who violate sanitation laws are held accountable. Residents are urged to support government sanitation efforts and dispose of waste responsibly, as well as desist from street trading and other activities that obstruct public spaces.
