The immigrant press just walked into my lane. VisaVerge's Oct-15 checklist (updated yesterday) now flags the cross-border forms โ FBAR and FATCA 8938. Two (2) days out. Thread on what actually matters.
1. FBAR (FinCEN 114): $10k+ aggregate across ALL foreign accounts at any point in the year, including accounts you merely have signature authority over. Automatic extension to Oct 15. Penalties start in five figures per violation.
2. Form 8938 (FATCA): This goes with your return, so it shares the Oct 15 date. If you hold specified foreign assets, this one also goes with the 1040.
3. Form 5472: 25%+ foreign-owned US corp with reportable related-party transactions = $25k per form, per year. Most foreign founders hear about it when it's already late.
4. Two (2) days to go. I'm walking through who files what + what to do if you missed prior years tomorrow, Wed 6 PM CT, 90 min, $50 (covers you + a co-founder). DM me "OCT15" and I'll hold your seat.
@ChidiOdinkalu@Cambridge_Uni Brillant Man and all his kids, including Tonye Cole of Sahara Energy, Alex and Jolly, Boma whom went to KC with me were equally as brillant as this great man. Awesome family.
Two (2) days to Oct 15. This is the first Oct 15 where the IRS already has your crypto numbers. Form 1099-DA is new this filing season. Here is what it actually means.
1. Form 1099-DA: brokers must now report digital-asset sales to the IRS, transactions on or after January 1, 2025. If you sold crypto through a US broker in 2025, the IRS got a copy before you filed.
2. The trap: it's PROCEEDS, not gains. For 2025 transactions, brokers report gross proceeds only; basis reporting starts with 2026 transactions. So the IRS sees the full amount. Your return has to supply the basis on Form 8949.
3. If your 8949 doesn't reconcile with what your broker reported, the matching notice comes later. And the digital-assets question is on Form 1040 itself with a yes/no under the penalties of perjury.
4. Who this affects: Anyone who traded across multiple exchanges (multiple 1099-DAs, the IRS aggregates, most taxpayers don't), and anyone assuming offshore exchanges are invisible.
5. On extension with crypto in 2025? Two (2 )days. DM me "OCT15" as I am walking through 1099-DA matching and what to do about it in tomorrow's Oct 15 Survival workshop (11 AM CT, 90 min, $50 per person).
@ose_anenih@TheRealA_J@diepole I agree with you. He is not hungry hence he won't cross certain boundaries that only the hungry would remove all in the bid to get power and then money.
5/ I help Nigerians in the diaspora stay compliant on both sides of the Atlantic: FBAR filings, cross-border returns, foreign-entity reporting. DM me this week. #FBAR
4. Missed prior years? Streamlined procedures exist for non-willful filers. Get advice before filing anything backward-looking. Ten days is plenty of time to get this right and no time at all to get it wrong.
3/ The cost of ignoring it: up to $10,000 per report for non-willful violations. Willful: the greater of $100,000 or 50% of the balance. In 2026's enforcement climate, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is prioritizing denaturalization, passport restrictions over tax debt above $66,000. Staying noncompliant is the expensive option!!
2/ The surprises that catch people: signature authority counts. If you can sign on your mother's account back home, it counts toward YOUR threshold even if the money isn't yours. And whether the account earned taxable income is irrelevant.
1/ The rule is simple: US person (citizen, green card, tax resident) + combined max balance over $10,000 at any moment during the year = FinCEN Form 114, filed electronically. Not your 1040. April 15 deadline, automatic extension to Oct 15.
