Prince William will be the first British monarch descended from King Charles II — through his mother, not through the royal line.

The Windsor family, for all its long history, does not descend from the Merry Monarch of the seventeenth century, who left no legitimate children. The Spencers do. Diana descended twice over from Charles II, through two of his acknowledged sons, the Dukes of Grafton and Richmond, and once more from his brother King James II through an acknowledged daughter.

The genealogical result is quietly remarkable: the bloodline of the Stuart kings will formally re-enter the British monarchy through a former nursery school assistant from Norfolk. Genealogists have pointed out for decades that Diana actually carried more historic English and Stuart royal blood than the family she married into, whose ancestry runs heavily through German princely houses.

Her family tree produced other fascinating connections along the way. She was a distant cousin of Winston Churchill through the Spencer-Churchill line of the Dukes of Marlborough, and American genealogists have traced links between her family and several U.S. presidents.

The Spencers, meanwhile, served the Crown for five centuries — as courtiers, sheriffs and ladies-in-waiting — while building one of the great family fortunes of England, originally rooted in sheep farming.

When her son is eventually crowned, several long and separate threads of British history will come together in a single figure — a quiet, centuries-long story finally reaching its close.
