There’s this thing in a lot of urbanist discourse where the idea is that if you just reframe a preference as a fear, then you can start talking about the statistical likelihood of the fear coming true, and then if you can show that the odds to be low, then actually your preference is irrational and you are obligated to overcome it.

But you don’t need to show that the erratic character on the subway is likely to actually harm you. It’s enough just to say that you don’t want to be around people like that. It’s not a fear to be overcome. It’s an ordinary preference about how cities should be operated.

Those who reject God and embrace materialism will view the decisions of others as deterministic rather than based on free will. The "shopping cart theory" of a good person is no longer valid, as too many people know about it and can now perceive they're being observed and put the shopping cart back just because of this perceptual pressure. It's the same as how "Is he nice to the waitress?" is no longer a valid test of character, because everyone now knows it's a test of character, and can easily fake politeness.
