Ambassador Morse Tanโs exit ban has been extended by three months.
His exit ban from South Korea has been extended again. He cannot leave until November 15.
Ambassador Tan is a US citizen and a former US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice. He is charged with defaming President Lee Jae-myung over remarks he made on American soil.
The court's reasoning: he might not return, and the state needs to secure its power to punish.
His legal team calls it an excessive restriction on fundamental rights. They argue it blocks him from gathering evidence and witnesses in the United States to prepare his own defense.
Sit with that.
A man held in one country over words spoken in another. Held in a way that keeps him from building his case.
His lawyers warn this becomes a diplomatic problem. It already is one.
