The military continues air strikes in ethnic areas and cracking down on protestors or businesses striking. Meanwhile, the people of Myanmar refuse to give up, calling for democracy to be restored, an end to the violence and 8000+ to be released. My wrap:

This man belongs in handcuffs at the International Criminal Court. In just 1 year #Myanmar's military junta has killed 1503 civilians & tortured 91 to death. Min Aung Hlaing is responsible for #CrimesAgainstHumanity. Time to hold him accountable for #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar 🇲🇲
Today's Silent Strike in Myanmar was yet another indication of the broad/deep opposition to the junta on the dark anniversary of their coup. Today I issued an appeal for stronger international action that featured courageous voices from Myanmar .

Today is a sad day. My concerns for Myanmar have increased since 1.2.21 and my thoughts are with the people of Myanmar who have suffered under the military for decades before. I pray that your voice will be heard. I miss you, my dear friends!
Almost 1 year since the coup, #Myanmar’s junta has given up on trying to win the hearts & minds of ordinary people, opting instead for airstrikes, massacres & scorched earth tactics. Time to prosecute these #CrimesAgainstHumanity.

EXCLUSIVE: #UN Special Envoy to #Myanmar says #military must be included in all talks to resolve crisis. But Dr Noeleen Heyzer is clear they cannot take the lead in negotiations. She spoke to me on eve of 1 year of #militarycoup on Feb 1. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
One year since the military coup in #Myanmar. Across the country, people are still resisting, in the face of harrowing atrocities. Many are fighting. Others have been forced into indefinite exile. Thinking of all Myanmar friends today.

#UN@RapporteurUn to #Myanmar says on 1st year of #coup, the "best & worst of humanity's unfolding in Myanmar". Calls on international community, UN members to "offer not only words of concern but strong action. The people of Myanmar deserve nothing less" #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
#Myanmar's eastern #Kayah capital #Loikaw has been pummeled for weeks now by #military forces including new air strikes today. Thousands have fled & rendered homeless. Some have posted pictures of aftermath of heavy air assaults leaving burning villages #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
Min Aung Hlaing must immediately halt the air and ground attacks that junta forces have unleashed on Loikaw, Karenni State, lift the blockade of those seeking to escape and allow access for those seeking to provide aid and shelter. I urge UN member states to join this call.
“They killed innocent civilians and burned the bodies to destroy the evidence of their crime.” Doctor confirms several bodies from Karenni State massacre had their hands tied behind their backs & were gagged. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar#CrimesAgainstHumanity https://t.co/qoBwlFwaed
Since assuming her role as #UN special envoy to #Myanmar mid-Dec, Dr Noeleen Heyzer has been communicating with #ASEAN ministers on Myanmar #crisis. Myanmar had announced last month it has closed UN special envoy's office indicating refusal to cooperate #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
#UN special envoy Noeleen Heyzer delivers her 1st New Year message to the #Myanmar citizens assuring them they're "not alone" as they fight for a better future. Adds "too many have paid the price for democracy" since nation ruled by Feb 1 #militarycoup#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
But #Myanmar#military rejected a statement condemning violent attacks issued by diplomats based in country. These embassies include #US#UK#EU. Military says their statement based on "unverifiable sources such as anti-government elements, terrorists" #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
The systematic atrocities of junta forces continued with the weekend massacre of 35 in Kayah State. The people of Myanmar don't need more words of condemnation from world leaders. They need their calls for strong principled action to finally be answered.

Disturbing reports of escalating attacks by junta forces on civilians in Karen state, with many thousands displaced, is another reason why the people of Myanmar desperately need stronger targeted sanctions, a global arms embargo and a robust increase in cross-border aid. Now.
On my recent mission to Bangladesh, Rohingya refugees expressed eagerness to return to Myanmar & dismay it is unsafe to do so. They deserve a safe, dignified return home. I thank Bangladesh for hosting me & for giving Rohingya refuge. Mission statement:
