Find me living close to the earth and connecting with her inhabitants. Environmental Ed. Join me in stewardship, foraging, cooking, and caring for pollinators.
In the last 10 days, students @CMS_FHPS tagged and released their last (25th) monarch, learned about monarchs' migration needs/hazards, assessed our campus for nectar plants monarchs (& other pollinators) can use, & gave input for land management on behalf of monarchs.
Natural Expressions students @CMS_FHPS spent Aug & Sept immersing themselves in our place, learning about edible/non-edible plants, which led to today--cooking in community with foraged ingredients (wild grape, autumn olive, crab apples, & curly dock). #placebasededucation
Caring for each other is important to us @CMS_FHPS. Natural Expressions students brightened the day of every staff member while identifying native and non-native plants of our place.
Natural Expressions students @CMS_FHPS had an amazing first week of school discovering organisms within the milkweed community, tagging two butterflies for @monarchwatch, and foraging sumac berries and learning to make sumac tea. It was delicious! #PlaceBasedEducation

EGGS!
Natural Expressions students @CMS_FHPS found 6 monarch eggs on common milkweed in the Ranger Valley Bird Sanctuary today! We logged this first egg sighting data as community scientists on https://t.co/8efX5mPgPR
@wandabryant Her presentation was powerful, wasn't it? I need to see it again to process more of her insights. I'm guessing it will end up on YouTube. ๐ค

End of semester community feast! Natural Expressions students @CMS_FHPS worked together to forage garlic mustard, field garlic, and edible flowers. They then used those ingredients to make salsa, hummus, pesto pasta, and salad/ vinaigrette.
7th gr. sci students @CMS_FHPS made an amazing impact in the community pulling invasive species with Mrs. Smith, Mr. Deppe, Mrs. Borton, & Mrs. Harvey. They bagged 2,730 lbs of (primarily) garlic mustard! Thanks to @CascadeMI for free dumpster service! Reported @StewardshipNet
You might have been wondering, "Who is the Fastest Striker in the Sea?" Well then, check out this video by a newspaper student @CMS_FHPS

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Caitlyn on an invasive species forest weaving unit. With different skill sets and expertise, the project is far more impactful for our students @CMS_FHPS than if either one of us had gone solo.
Do you have an amazing environmental ed project that would be cool to do with students? Do you need extra funds to make it happen? Look no further!! MAEOE has grants available for our members 2x a year!! Be on the lookout for MAEOEโs next grant cycle this fall. ๐ฒโ๏ธ๐๐๐
@KaraHaaSciEd @richbacolor Ah, yes! I listened to RWK read this piece this winter. It's still on my home screen for re-listening :) Her take on community is so rich.
