🧵The Inclusive Democracy Act guarantees the right to vote in federal elections regardless of a criminal conviction. CLC’s Reggie Thedford joined fellow advocates & @SenPeterWelch yesterday to urge support for this bill, which removes a major obstacle to #democracy in America.
I’m tryna get @BraxtonCook latest album “Who Are You When No One is Watching”, which is a masterpiece, on vinyl. But does it exist yet? Can I preorder it?
We can’t talk about an inclusive democracy unless we talk about including those whose voting rights have been taken away. Check out our panel if you’re at the #AmericanDemocracySummit
To make progress on the issues that we care most about, such as health care, racial justice, reproductive rights, and the environment, we must build a system that serves the people rather than wealthy donors. Congress must pass the #FreedomToVoteAct.
Today, the CA Reparations Task Force released its report issuing recommendations for repairing the harm caused by slavery in this state.
One recommendation is to restore voting rights to people in prison. We are working to do JUST THAT by working to pass ACA 4! @FreeTheVoteCA
Disenfranchising individuals while they are incarcerated has no public safety benefit and serves only to perpetuate a cycle of disenfranchisement and marginalization. Will you support #HB39 restoring the right to vote to those in prison? @RepKatieStuart
Dear Lord,
Today, Thank You for life and the gift of Your love. With You I can do anything, I will survive and I will experience a joy that is infinite and surpasses anything the world can offer. Today, I believe that my greatest prayers are being answered. In Jesus name. Amen🙏🏾
“If citizenship does not stop at the prison gates, neither should the right to vote,” Thedford maintained. “It’s time for our country to reject the remnants of Jim Crow and commit to safer, more equitable communities.” -https://t.co/XWncoFcAHo
The Supreme Court is out of control. Use @StandUpAmerica's tool to email Congress, urging them to pass the Judiciary Act and the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act: https://t.co/7bKONaNV2M
If you're feeling pessimistic about democracy,
If you're worried that voting rights are in retreat,
If you're afraid your voice won't count...
I hear you on that.
But also, check out what we just did in NY. This is what it looks like when a state puts voters first #NYVRA ⤵️
There’s a reason why more than 70% of Americans think that members of Congress should be banned from trading stocks.
It’s because our representatives should be working for us, not their wallets.
In the last 4 years, 12 states have restored rights, but people aren’t always aware that they can vote — and no one goes out of their way to tell them.
“There’s a lot of confusion, and that’s by design,” says @Lead_ByExample at @StandUpAmerica
Can you vote with a criminal conviction? It's complicated! So complicated it needs a multi-step flow chart from the @PrisonPolicy. But there's a simple answer if you live in Washington, D.C. . . https://t.co/4f9JFQlKjL
