X limits how many accounts you can follow in a day (currently a technical cap of 400 follows per day for most accounts) for two main reasons: platform reliability and spam prevention.

Reliability / infrastructure
Mass following generates a lot of write operations and notifications. X says these technical limits exist to reduce strain on backend systems, cut downtime, and avoid error pages. The daily follow cap (plus shorter unpublished rate checks that can trigger after rapid follows) is one of several action limits (posts, DMs, email changes, etc.) applied across web, apps, and API.

Spam and abuse prevention
Follows on X are not automatically mutual, so unlimited or rapid following is an easy way for bots and growth-hackers to:
Mass-follow people hoping for follow-backs
Do “follow churn” (follow many accounts then unfollow them to inflate numbers)
Copy another account’s following list with automation

X therefore also has rules against aggressive or indiscriminate following, plus a separate ratio gate that kicks in after you follow 5,000 accounts. The daily pace limit is the first line of defense against that behavior.

Following someone back counts toward the same daily limit as following anyone else. If you hit the cap you’ll see a message that you can’t follow more people right now; it typically resets after 24 hours (or sooner if you only triggered a short-term rate limit). Verified/Premium accounts sometimes get higher unofficial allowances in older reports, but X’s current public limits page lists 400/day as the technical number.
