I can confirm that giving talks on zoom is just as scary as giving talks in real life!๐คญ
Despite the nerves it was such a pleasure to share the things I wish I knew before starting my PhD to new students starting at @livuniphysics tomorrow!
Here's a thread of the advice I gave!

The ECR Materials annual conference returns this year, continuing our committee theme of AI and ML for materials synthesis and analysis.
There's been 121 years since Marie Curie was not going to be nominated alongside Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel (luckily, a committee member stepped in to advocate for Marie), and we still haven't progressed. This is incredibly disappointing.
Congratulations to our 2024 medicine laureate Victor Ambros โจ
This morning he celebrated the news of his prize with his colleague and wife Rosalind Lee, who was also the first author on the 1993 'Cell' paper cited by the Nobel Committee.

@Vicibox @HarwellXPS@SCI_materials@UniofOxford Thank you so much Vici! That is an incredible and impressive career path ๐ and not competing and comparing with others is such an important message ๐
@bluebananna@DiamondLightSou Thank you so much Anna! ๐ฅน Right back at you!! You are definitely a huge role model and an inspiration to so many of us in the surface science and chemistry communities! ๐ฉโ๐ฌ
Should be celebrated and encouraged ๐ซ
It was lovely to hear how far we've come with equality and diversity, however, we still have a long way to go and we all need to take responsibility in making that change happen ๐ช
I had such a great day at @HarwellXPS with all the amazing researchers filming this series! We had so many important conversations throughout the day and it just highlighted the importance of having spaces where everyone feels safe and confident to bring their authentic selves ๐ฉโ๐ฌ
Next up in our series focusing on Women in Surface Science is @SCI_materials very own @Leannee_Jones! Leanne (a post-doctoral researcher at @UniofOxford) tells us about the importance of role models and representation in science.

An inclusive and supportive environment in science will be the key to achieving diversity. Everyone should be able to thrive in STEM no matter what their background and we shouldn't need to fit in a certain box to be able to do good science. We all bring our strengths and that
๐๐ Merry Xmas everyone! Our 2023 Christmas newsletter is here! It's been a fantastic year for us and we have lots of people to thank for it. So a huge thank you to all of our users, industrial partners, collaborators, funders and everyone here for engaging with us! ๐๐
