Would your AI assistant keep your secrets under pressure?
A study accepted at #ICML2026 Seoul put 24 leading AI models through 904 adversarial, multi-turn conversations designed to make them crack.
17 out of 24 failed at protecting user privacy, even the famous LLMs. It was the single hardest behaviour of the 37 tested.
The stranger finding: AI "character" appears to be one bundled trait. Models good at honesty were also good at resisting manipulation, refusing harmful requests, accepting correction — one dial, not 37 switches.
Except for one behaviour that refuses to join the bundle: self-preservation.

One number from #ICML2026 tells you where AI research actually stands today.
Of the 6,352 papers accepted at the world's premier machine learning conference this year, @nvidia says around 2,000 — roughly a third — cite its GPUs.
Another 145 are built on its open Nemotron models. NVIDIA itself landed 74 accepted papers.

#ICML2026 has announced its awards 🏆 and they map neatly onto where AI research is heading.
The two Outstanding Papers both tackle diffusion models:
1. First paper shows that the celebrated "flexibility" of diffusion language models can actually sabotage their reasoning;
2. Second paper proves these models can generate accurate samples far more efficiently than the theory previously allowed.
Among five honorable mentions: a paper asking how much language models truly memorise versus learn — and claiming GPT-style models store roughly 3.6 bits per parameter — plus work explaining why AI image generators produce near-identical outputs from the same seed.
The position-paper track carried the sharpest edge. The top award went to a paper arguing the AI alignment community is "unintentionally building a censor's toolkit" — a critique of alignment tools from inside the field itself.
