In my first 5 years as a journalist at @NewTimesRwanda, I was assigned to @RwandaParliamnt as a Parliamentary Reporter. I often sat in the Chamber of Deputies, where many of the legislative debates were engaging and “exciting”.

It was there that I witnessed Hon. Donatille #Mukabalisa's leadership and calm demeanor. In her soft-spoken voice, she presided over proceedings with remarkable confidence and grace, as though she had been born for the role. She embodied a distinctly Rwandan sense of composure, humility, and gratitude.

Despite her busy schedule, she never turned down requests for an interview. That kindness and accessibility left a lasting impression on me.

Rwanda has lost a remarkable woman who led the world's first female-majority parliament with wisdom, dignity, and calm leadership. May her soul rest in perfect peace. My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and everyone at the Parliament of Rwanda.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear colleague, Senator Donatille Mukabalisa.

I had the privilege of serving under her leadership as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, and later alongside her in the Senate. Beyond Parliament, we worked together as leaders of our respective political parties—she as President of the Liberal Party (PL) and I as President of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda—and through the National Consultative Forum of Political Organizations.

Over the years, I came to know her as a humble, principled, and dedicated leader who always placed Rwanda's interests above all else. Her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to public service earned the respect of colleagues across the political spectrum.

On behalf of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, and in my capacity as Spokesperson of the National Consultative Forum of Political Organizations, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, the Liberal Party, fellow Senators, friends, and all Rwandans.

President Trump Nominates Nick Checker as US Ambassador to Rwanda

President Donald Trump has nominated Nick Checker, a former CIA intelligence officer, as the next US Ambassador to Rwanda. If confirmed by the Senate, he will head the diplomatic mission in Kigali, succeeding Eric Kneedler.

Who is Amb. Checker?

Before his nomination, Checker served at the State Department as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa and Foreign Assistance. Earlier, from January to June 2026, he was the Senior Bureau Official leading the Bureau of African Affairs.

Before joining State, he was Deputy Executive Secretary for the National Security Council under President Trump.

Checker spent 11 years at the CIA, covering conflicts in the greater Middle East and the Horn of Africa, and also served a stint in the Office of Congressional Affairs. For his work on Afghanistan, he received the Intelligence Commendation Medal in 2021 and the Director’s Award for Analysis in 2022.

In April this year, during the commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Checker called on the world to remember and continue recognizing the gravity of this genocide.

“As we gather here today to mark the solemn occasion of #Kwibuka32, let us do so in somber recognition of the unspeakable horrors that befell the Rwandan people during the Genocide against the Tutsi,” he said at the time.

In May, Nick was in Uganda representing Trump during President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony.

Nominating a career intelligence officer and diplomat with this profile signals how closely Trump’s team is interested in Rwanda and the Great Lakes region more broadly.
