I just watched @BishopBarron's first Thomas Aquinas lecture for @petersonacademy.

He's one of the best lecturers I've ever heard.

He's engaging and coherent, well-armed with stories, an effective synthesizer, and able to shift up and down levels of analysis with ease ("here's the social impact; here's the theological significance; here's the historical context, etc.).

I've interviewed him, and we have spent time together, and that was all exceedingly worthwhile. But a full lecture requires a different skill set, and not many people have it.

He captured my attention, despite my current difficulty with pain. And I learned a lot.

He's also eminently likeable.

It's a privilege to have the Bishop's lectures on Peterson Academy.

Christ is the singular promised seed in Galatians 3:16, Paul identifies Christ as the ultimate heir through whom Abraham’s blessing reaches the nations:

“The promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring… ‘And to your offspring,’ who is Christ.”

Christ is therefore the representative and fulfillment of Abraham’s family and those united in Christ become Abraham’s offspring.

Paul then says:

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ… And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” -Galatians 3:27, 29

The promise belongs to Christ, and everyone who belongs to Christ shares in his inheritance.

Jews and Gentiles do not become heirs through ethnicity, circumcision, or observance of the Mosaic law; they inherit through faith in Christ.

Paul is denying that physical descent from Abraham automatically makes someone an heir of the saving promise. Ethnic lineage by itself is insufficient:

“Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. - Galatians 3:7

The inheritance is not divided into one saving path for ethnic Jews and another for Gentiles. Both belong to Christ.

But and this is a huge BUT Galatians 3 does not by establish that ethnic Israel has no continuing historical, covenantal, or prophetic significance.

Paul’s immediate argument is about:

-who inherits Abraham’s saving promise;
-how that inheritance is received;
-whether Gentiles must become Jews or keep the Mosaic law to receive it.

Romans which was written after Galatians is where Paul addresses ethnic Israel.

“They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants…” Romans 9:4

He also says:

“God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew.” Romans 11:2

Why would Paul say any of that things if the Abrahamic covenant (where Abraham was asleep and only God walked meaning that God bound himself to the irrevocable promise) had simply been revoked?

He wouldn’t.

And if you still need more clarity, then you should heed Paula’s warning, when he warns Gentile believers not to become arrogant toward the natural branches:

“Remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.” Romans 11:18

He then says:

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” Romans 11:29

IRREVOCABLE. Why does he use that word because the Abrahamic covenant (unlike the covenant of Sinai) is an irrevocable covenant. There are no conditions or provisions or requirements.

The biggest problem with replacement theology is what it says about God.

When you claim that God revoked a covenant He swore to uphold, you are not attacking Israel. You are attacking the faithfulness and character of God.

You are saying that God breaks his promises. And that is not the God we serve.
