@OliviaR34156685 I agree. In my opinion, Canadian music is more popular now than it ever was. With major celebrities like Drake, The Weeknd, and Justin Bieber constantly releasing new and popular music, it does feel unnecessary to place a quota on Canadian music #POPMUSW22
@JakieraRideout I agree. Canadian music should be highlighted and celebrated but not just to meet a quota. It should be celebrated because of how great it is, not because of its origin. #POPMUSW22
I have complicated feelings about CanCon regulations. I feel that the way we listen to music should not be regulated by anyone. However, I worry that without regulations, Canadian artists would not get the same opportunities to showcase their talent. #popmusw22
@dchicasduena This is a great point! A lot of artists spend time working on their show as a whole. They put on a show consisting of theatrics, dance, music, and lights. Artists often market their shows as an experience with less focus on the music itself. #POPMUSW22
@PardyAbigail This is a great point! Attending a concert is often for the experience rather than for the quality of music. Social media has made music festivals, like those held in the counterculture era, more popular often drawing people together to dance and enjoy culture. #POPMUSW22
Auto-tune has impacted how live music is consumed. I think auto-tuned songs often lack “deeper meaning” and I would much rather watch a passionate performance by a musician who can entertain and play on emotions with just their voice and an acoustic accompaniment. #popmusw22
@ACJ78028692 This is a great point. Not only was schlock created by white people, it targeted them as well. Schlock music alienated any listeners who didn’t fit within the typical white middle class person of its time. #popmusw22
@PardyAbigail This is a great point. Schlock was not only cultural theft but it also tried to erase African-American rock completely. The schlock music was a disrespectful display and mockery of others cultural and traditions. #popmusw22
Most schlock music, if not all, is guilty of cultural theft. Schlock occurred when white artist were used a “safe”vessel for sharing black music in the 40s and 50s. Untalented musicians were given pieces of music to preform simply because they fit a certain image. #popmusw22
@OliviaR34156685 I agree! Ray Charles use of voice breaking allows his audience to understand what he is feeling better than lyrics alone. His technique makes every song he sings emotional and passionate regardless of the lyrics. #popmusw22
@JennaleeRalph I agree! His passion in his music likely head to his success in the music industry and this passion was displayed using voice breaking. #popmusw22
Voice breaking signifies great emotion. Often when people speak at a funeral or wedding (both places where emotions run high) they tend to cry which leads to voice breaking. Incorporation of voice breaking in music is used to portray intense feelings and emotions. #popmusw22
@joseph_mus11 This is a great point. As a child I was only exposed to music that my parents enjoyed through CD’s that they purchased. Now I have the ability to listen to any song I want right from my phone. This will certainly influence how younger generations listen to music. #popmusw22
@GojiraKira I definitely agree. Advances in technology have lead to the opportunity to listen to music anywhere and at anytime. This is something that I am very grateful for. I definitely enjoy the ability to listening to music whenever I want. #popmusw22
One listening tech that is associated with higher social class or status are Apple air Pods. Personally, I prefer over ear headphones but bluetooth headphone technology and music apps like Spotify on mobile phones have allowed for a more mobile listening experience. #popmusw22
@josie16t Great point! Do you think this is a recent development in the music industry? Personally I feel as thought this was most prevalent throughout the 2000s. It seems to me that these days you are not only selling your music but also selling your “brand”. #POPMUSW22
@jadenmac8 Great point! Although, I do enjoy listening to certain songs with meaningless lyrics and I find myself actively listening to the instruments. For ex, I find little meaning in the lyrics of Sgt. Pepper (Beatles) but it has some incredible instrumental sections. #POPMUSW22
A false need created by pop music is the need for auto tune. I believe too much electronic influence creates a busy feeling and limits focus on parts of a song. The prevalence of electronics in popular music may mean that it is targeted towards passive listeners. #popmusw22
