The killer Hong Kong fire shows how freedom is an even greater loss than you'd think

“Bid rigging” has been a politically contentious issue in Hong Kong. As these types of corruption scandals became more rampant, watchdogs and civil groups formed the “anti-bid rigging coalition” in 2014. The founders of the network included pro-democracy Hong Kong legislators who were later jailed as part of the government’s political crackdown. Former Democratic Party legislator Lam Cheuk Ting, who served as the face of the coalition, has been jailed since 2021 for participating in a primary election under the notorious National Security Law (NSL).

If the Wang Fuk Court controversy had taken place 10 years ago, when politics were more plural and amicable to whistleblowers and watchdogs, Lam would have taken the lead and constantly pressured the authority to address the long-standing concerns. Questions would have been tabled in the Legislative chamber, senior officials would have been summoned to meet with the concerned groups and explain the issues. Independent media would conduct an investigative report, and the public need not worry about retribution for speaking out.
