@knowledgeiswatt Itโs an interesting topic for sure. Many studies come to this conclusion it seems, yet I repeatedly hear on podcasts from coaches working with elite cyclists and triathletes who adopt โtorque trainingโ of some form with their athletes.
For this months @HNERC_NclUni staff feature weโd like to introduce Dr. @Owen_Jeffries
Owen is Lecturer in Health and Exercise Physiology and his research focuses on environmental physiology.

@Alan_Couzens If you had to pick one field test method for setting training zones for triathlon swimming (e.g. 200+400 CSS, 1k TT etc ) which would you choose?
@Alan_Couzens Thank you. Would it be fair to say an elite has an advantage when training around LTP as the stress to the aerobic system is higher due to their high %vo2max at LTP so training here has more โbenefitsโ than for an amateur? Less anaerobic contribution in the session.
@Alan_Couzens If elites train mostly in Z4 (5Zmodel) for their HIT does this work better than in less trained athletes b/c their LTP/MLSS is at a much โ %VOmax and hence a greater aerobic stimulus in Z4. Amateurs may req greater intensity in Z5? LTP%VO2max important #context?
@Alan_Couzens My question came about when considering the โtime@~90%vo2maxโ frequently stated in the literature and how an elite may be able to achieve this in Z4 vs a amateur in Z5?
@Alan_Couzens Broadly iโm referring to interval training above LTP with the aim of increasing VO2max. If t@~90%VO2max is proposed as a session goal, Elites can accumulate time here while being still very close to LTP and with lower Bla levels vs amateur with LTP@75%VO2max? So less time in Z5 ?
@peter__leo Thanks, my findings also. Do you have a preference of which method you prefer use for โsecond thresholdโ e.g LTP2/ModDmax/Dmax etc or would it depend on the data? I realise this is a bit of a can of worms.
@peter__leo Would I be correct in saying the incremental test has to be taken to exhaustion for the software to be accurate? One step past 4mmol for example is not sufficient? Thank you.
@TrainingPeaks is there any reason TrainingPeaks online is running so slow recently? I have been having issues working in it for three days now and it is not my internet connection. There appears to be a huge lag on everything.
