This fight is best remembered as the "final straw" fight for Howard Cosell as it prompted him to announce he would no longer call professional fights. In response, Cobb, a former football player, said, "hey, if it gets him to stop broadcasting NFL games, I'll go play football for a week, too!"
Well, well, well....it appears now that the Cal-Poly vs. WVU games will be on linear TV, so, indeed, they will be "must-see TV." :-) Good! Just set the DVR.
@LCombatsports Although politics was a big part of his story, my admiration was mostly focused on his talent and athleticism, which, in the 1960s, was as good as it got. It is interesting that time saw him transformed from one of the most hated to one of the most beloved.
It's been 10 years since his passing, yet his impact on his sport and in this world remains. He was many things to many people, and, for me, he was one of the pillars for the love of boxing that became my profession and became my identity.
His personality, his immense skills and his profound intangibles were beyond question and he remains among the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters to have ever pulled on gloves, an incredibly difficult feat for a relatively modern fighter.
In 2018, I co-authored a book that examined his career statistically and it was one of the most fascinating studies I ever conducted. It shouldn't have been a surprise that it ended up being that way, for his appeal is timeless. The book also graphically explained why he experienced the health issues that began in his 30s and that would grow progressively worse throughout the remainder of his life.
He is still missed, but we are sustained by the countless memories he created for all of us. Continue to rest in peace.
I like this, and, ideally, it should require humility and honesty about the level of your game. Me? Red tees, please. I broke 100 on a regulation course only once -- I recorded a 99 years ago. I know I'd be better if I buckled down and learned the game, but that wasn't my path.
Isn't it wild that this has gone absolutely viral? My home state either flies under the radar or is ridiculed for one reason or another, so when anything associated with West Virginia gets this kind of positive attention, we notice and we appreciate. West Virginia is a special state with special and proud people.
@chiefjimmy45 Doesn't it? And I meant to say "we West Virginians," but my fingers were working faster than my brain, and, even with the blue check-mark, I can't edit replies. Pardon my grammar. :-)
I remember watching this live and was completely dumbfounded by how wrong this call was. Some say there have been worse incidences, but, for me, this is THE worst I've ever seen. The runner was tagged FEET from home plate, not inches. Horrible!
With my fresh workload clear for now, I spent most of today on something I put off for months: Updating my master DVD list (a must for serious collectors because organization is everything). I had fallen 235 discs behind but as of five minutes ago. I finished it. A successful day.
@ClonesCyclone was just 28 years old when he chose to retire, and, unlike many fighters, he stuck by his decision. In this clip from the most recent "ITC," he tells @SmittyBoxing and me the reasons behind his decision. The entire episode can be seen here: https://t.co/JYEm33lCiz
