The Stellenbosch fee protests boil down to more than “white privilege” optics, those seated in lecture rooms aren’t just “relaxed”; they’re likely there because fees (R60,000-R100,000/yr, 2024) were paid, often via parental planning or loans. The university’s 2023 stats show 64% white, 19% African, 14% coloured, 3% Indian/Asian, not a real-time privilege snapshot but a legacy of who’s historically accessed elite education. Protesters, disproportionately black, face deregistration because NSFAS, the ANC’s big fix, is a mess, R47 billion disbursed in 2023, yet 40,000+ students unfunded, with a R4 billion hole (DHET, 2024). This isn’t a “culture of not wanting to pay”, it’s a system drowning in demand it can’t fund.

The ANC didn’t paint poverty black, apartheid did, with spatial and educational scars still festering. Stats SA (2022): 48.2% of black Africans below the poverty line vs. 1% of whites. The ANC’s sin? Not bulldozing that gap fast enough. They react, fee freezes, NSFAS patches, only after tires burn, not before. Where’s the proactive overhaul? Scale TVETs (500,000 enrolled vs. 1M in varsities) or tax graduates, solutions exist, but execution’s absent.

NB!! Parental varsity planning? A cruel joke. Saving R60K-R100K annually over 18 years means R278-R463 monthly at 5% interest. Median black household income: R3,500 (Stats SA). White median: 5x that. Most black parents aren’t dodging fees, they’re structurally locked out. Protests aren’t just about costs; they’re about this trap.

I back the EFF’s fight, free education up to undergrad, R78 billion/year via corporate tax hikes and cutting fat (2024 manifesto). It’s not pie-in-the-sky; SA’s tax-to-GDP ratio (25%) lags OECD averages. It’s about intent: education as a right, not a privilege. But their Stellenbosch-style disruption risks alienating allies, and their fiscal plan assumes a compliance miracle no ANC’s pulled off. Still, they’re swinging at a government that’s defaulted on black futures, poverty’s colour isn’t new; the failure to fix it is.
