Thanks for your thoughtful response. I think you might be conflating the idea or ideals of postmodernism with how they have been implemented by bad actors. At its core, postmodernism is not even a set of beliefs or values – like a promotion of promiscuity, etc., - but a suspicion mechanism. I can’t speak for Mike, but for myself I equate it with its main progenitor (Derrida) and his tool (deconstruction), which is just that – a tool. And as such it can be used for good or ill. I am reminded of Bowden’s famous quip that while deconstructionists want to look for textual evidence that Celine wet the bed, you could “deconstruct deconstruction” and end up with Celine again!

Postmodernism resisted “master narratives” and “closure.” Everything was always contingent, up for debate. I can see how one might think that such a frame of mind would be acidic to the very idea of cultural inheritance, patriarchy, or folkishness. But at some point postmodernism’s resistance to closure becomes not only hegemonic and oppressive, but also (fortunately) a self-destruct mechanism. It allows us to “deconstruct deconstruction” by highlighting postmodernism’s many contradictions (being a closed system of radical non-closure, or a master narrative knit from the automatic eschewing of master narratives, etc.)

I am not looking to embrace postmodernism in the way that it is typically deployed in the higher humanities, except as such a tool.
