Ukraine today is militarily the strongest nation in Europe. It’s battle tested, battle hardened.

Usually we look at Ukraine as a country that needs our help. That is still right, but we should look at Ukraine as an asset, a country that can actually contribute to European security.

We should strengthen the European pillar within Nato based on a coalition of the willing, including Ukraine.

On Monday, the EU can finally open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.

Sweden will continue to work for the opening of all negotiations clusters for both Ukraine and Moldova without delay, in line with the Commission’s assessment.

Many countries are now knocking on the EU’s door. They want to be part of a free Europe and the world’s largest single market. It is in our interest to help the candidate countries make progress towards joining the Union.

No more beach parties. No more fancy dinners. No more shopping weekends.

While Ukrainians are forced to spend yet another summer fleeing Russian bombs, Russian citizens should not be spending theirs on European beaches and shopping streets.

Sweden has taken the initiative to put an end to Russian luxury tourism in Europe. This is a matter of principle, solidarity with Ukraine, and European security. Russian officials and combatants should not be moving freely around Europe.

Together with a broad coalition of Member States, we are calling on the European Commission to act.

News of the Gripen deal for Ukraine is another major achievement by Zelenskyy in strengthening the country’s defense. And another step in deepening Ukraine’s special relationship with Sweden.

But the bigger question is this: is Ukraine becoming a Nordic country?

Not geographically. Strategically.

For decades, Ukrainians thought of their place in Europe through the lens of Central and Eastern Europe. Some dreamed of an arc from the Baltic to the Black Sea.

After 2022, reality began to change doctrine. A renaissance in Ukraine’s relations with Northern Europe began.

It was driven by three forces: the North’s leadership in supporting Ukraine, backed by resources; frictions with partners in Central Europe; and Ukraine’s search for more strategic anchors in Europe.

For Ukrainians, this movement makes sense. More than a thousand years ago, the Varangians were an important part of the rise of Rus. In the early 18th century, Sweden was already an ally of Ukraine’s attempt to break free from Moscow’s rule.

But this is not only about history.

Ukrainians are drawn to the Nordic world, where strength does not contradict democracy, defense does not contradict prosperity, technology reinforces resilience, and cool-headedness serves freedom and dignity.

Kyiv will not change its geography. But its center of gravity is changing.

The Vikings are returning to Ukraine. And Ukrainians are charting their country’s path to the North.

It is still unclear where this will lead. But it is already a fascinating turn of history.

We are preparing a major defense package for Ukraine and a strong step regarding Gripen fighter jets, which will definitely make our combat aviation more effective. 🚨Joint Statement on Arctic Security from the Arctic Allies:

Recognizing the security challenges and economic opportunities in the Arctic and the High North, the Arctic Allies met to discuss our efforts to build a secure and prosperous region.

The Arctic is quickly becoming a sphere of increasing geopolitical strategic importance. With Russia’s increased military activity and China’s growing strategic interest, we seek to bolster stability in the Arctic region.

We are enhancing our military presence, surveillance capabilities, and joint training in the Arctic and the High North. We do so in a coordinated and calibrated way.

We support NATO’s increased presence in the region through activities such as Arctic Sentry, Air Policing in Iceland, and Forward Land Forces Finland, as well as the ongoing strengthening of the Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, a new CAOC in Norway and the ongoing modernization of NORAD.

Today, we have agreed to deepen our dialogue on security challenges in the Arctic and the High North.

With new opportunities opening up, and new challenges emerging, close cooperation on Arctic security and economic development among our nations is more important than ever – as Europe and Canada are assuming a greater responsibility for deterrence and defense across the region.

We also recognize the importance of economic and resource development in the Arctic and have tasked our experts to coordinate more closely on these issues, including research security, investment screening, and critical infrastructure modernization and protection.

We look forward to continuing to work together to achieve our common goal of a secure, prosperous, and peaceful Arctic.
