Members of the @7thlighthorse Gundagai Troop, including a NSW Area Frontiersman are deploying to South Africa later this week to train mounted anti-poaching unit rangers. God Guard Thee fellas! https://t.co/H9YVLESLwb #lighthorse#antipoachingunit#frontiersmen#wildlife
To make up the Response Dress, substitute the navy blue shirt with a hi-vis one and to make up the Field Dress, substitute the hi-vis shirt with an olive green one. Can be "tactical", workwear or hiking gear. Only the colours matter.
NSW has finalised its operational uniforms. Seen are the Working Dress (navy blue shirt), Response Dress (hi-vis shirt) & Field Dress (olive drab shirt). Upon joining, a new member only has to put together their Working Dress which is blue shirt and khaki pants. Cheap and simple.
Legion of Frontiersmen SGT John Boyer chatting with NSW Governor Sir Phillip Game in Sydney in 1930. Boyer was a Veteran of the Zulu War, Matabele War and the Second Boer War. The medals worn are those of his son Arthur who was KIA in Belgium with the AIF 3rd Infantry Bn in 1917.
One of the tasks of the Legion of Frontiersmen today is keeping the old skills of the Legion alive. One example of this is bushcraft and minimalist campcraft.
This post on our "Australian Frontiersman" blog details some of these old-timey campcraft skills. https://t.co/y4avqWBcAS
Three members of the Manchester Troop, Legion of Frontiersmen in Belgium in 1914. The troop had self-deployed to Belgium and were in action against the Germans as part of the Belgian cavalry during the Yser campaign. More on them later.
Frontiersmen of the Legion Past...
Did you know that FC Selous was killed in East Africa on 04JAN1917 while serving with the 25th Bn (Frontiersmen) Royal Fusiliers? The 25th Bn was raised by Legion Commandant LtCol Pat Driscoll and manned by Legion personnel, Selous included.
The Legion is recruiting. Inspired by the original Legion of Frontiersmen of the 1910s, we're re-establishing the Legion in Australia. Visit https://t.co/SA6DWAQ6hi. Join us.
@footsteps_pod That happens here occasionally, but luckily folks like those are in the minority. Most families are very appreciative of any further information on their WWI ancestor and that makes it worthwhile.
In the last decade or so, the Legion has copped flak for being "Walts" with fake rank and tin medals, alas, much of it deserved. We cleaned up that mess, but I'm glad we didn't have to deal with this scoundrel from the Aussie Legion of the 1910s. https://t.co/NfABsD6AD2
@KellyBadge Very nice early LF collar dog. Also used as a hat badge. If you look at the background picture on our Twitter profile you'll see these in use in 1914. The picture is Cootamundra, Australia but they were standardised until replaced by the current crest in the late 1920s.
