Today, on National Medal of Honor Day, Putnam proudly remembers one of its own: Torpedoman Second Class Henry Breault, USN.
Born in Putnam in 1900, Breault became the first submariner, and the only enlisted submariner in history, to receive the Medal of Honor for actions aboard a U.S. submarine.
On October 28, 1923, aboard the USS O-5, the submarine sank in under a minute after a collision. Instead of escaping to safety, Breault turned back into the flooding torpedo room to rescue a trapped shipmate. He sealed the hatch behind them, and the two men endured 31 hours in the dark, airless compartment until they were rescued.
For his extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty, President Calvin Coolidge presented him the Medal of Honor in 1924.
True courage isn’t just facing danger, it’s choosing to face it for someone else. Thank you, TM2 Breault. Your sacrifice and selflessness will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

The photo of the explosion of USS Shaw's forward magazine is one of the most iconic images from the attack on Pearl Harbor that occurred #OTD 1941. Despite the heavy damage, the Shaw was repaired by 1942 and served in the Pacific for the rest of the war, earning 11 battle stars.
The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields," written by Lt. Col. John McCrae while serving on the front lines.
