Nigeria Moves Closer to Battery Storage Adoption to Strengthen National Power Grid.
Nigeria has taken another step toward improving the reliability of its electricity supply as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), commenced a two-day workshop in Abuja focused on the adoption of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The workshop aims to review and validate a comprehensive study covering the technical, policy, and regulatory requirements for integrating battery storage technology into Nigeria’s electricity grid. The initiative brings together regulators, power sector operators, engineers, and industry experts to examine the findings and ensure they reflect the realities of Nigeria’s power system.
Battery Energy Storage Systems are designed to store electricity and release it when needed, helping to stabilize power supply, reduce outages, and improve the efficiency of the electricity network. Experts believe the technology could play a major role in addressing many of the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.
Speaking at the opening session, TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, called on participants to thoroughly examine the study and provide practical recommendations. He stressed the importance of open discussions to ensure the final report delivers workable solutions for the country’s electricity industry.
Represented by TCN’s General Manager of Engineering, Mojeed Akintola, Abdulaziz described the AfDB-backed project as a timely intervention. According to him, as Nigeria continues to seek greater stability in electricity supply, battery storage technology offers an important opportunity to improve grid performance and resilience.
"Mr. Speaker, what exactly are our Service Chiefs doing?! Terrorists and bandits are literally taking over Nigerian territory!
Their fundamental duty is to secure and protect our land, yet communities are falling under their control.
In the first week of May, bandits invaded my hometown of Goro in Sokoto State — they killed one person and abducted 10 women and children. Just five days later, they struck Rimau town, killing another innocent soul and abducting 24 more people .Where is the urgency? Where is the decisive action? As a nation, where are we heading if our military and security leadership cannot reclaim our own soil from these criminals?
This is unacceptable. The Service Chiefs must rise to the occasion and do their job — enough is enough! #SecureNigeria #EndInsecurity"
PRESS RELEASE
EDO POLICE ARREST OLUCHI AND SYNDICATE FOR STAGED KIDNAPPING, RECOVERS FIREARM USED IN RANSOM VIDEOS
The Edo State Police Command has uncovered a carefully orchestrated kidnapping scam and arrested four suspects who conspired to fraudulently obtain Fifty Million Naira (₦50,000,000) as ransom from unsuspecting family members through a fabricated abduction plot.
On 1st June, 2026, one Mr. Tony Ugbowan of Agbor Road, Benin City, reported at the Command that his wife, Mrs. Oluchi Ugbowan, aged 45 years, had been kidnapped on her way to her shop at Ramat Park along Agbor Road. He explained that on 28th May, 2026, he received a call from a concealed telephone number demanding a ransom of Fifty Million Naira (₦50,000,000) for her release.
Upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit immediately commenced a discreet investigation, deploying both intelligence and technical resources to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnap. Thorough investigation led to the arrest of one Israel Ability, male, aged 28 years, at Ramat Park, Agbor Road, Benin City. During his arrest, the mobile phone belonging to the purported victim was recovered from him. Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that he had been contracted by Mrs. Oluchi Ugbowan to negotiate ransom with her family while falsely presenting her as a kidnapped victim.
Further investigation subsequently led operatives on 5th June, 2026, to a hotel in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, where Mrs. Oluchi Ugbowan was arrested. During interrogation, she confessed to staging her own kidnapping and thereafter led investigators to the residence of an accomplice in Delta State, one Ochukwudem Uwadia, male, aged 38 years.
Investigation revealed that the residence was used as the location where videos depicting the victim with tied hands and feet were recorded and circulated to family members as proof of captivity. The suspect further disclosed that Uwadia's son, Chibuzor Ochukwudem, male, aged 18 years, was the individual seen in the videos pointing a firearm at her head in order to further lend credibility to the false kidnapping narrative.
All suspects connected to the criminal conspiracy have been arrested. A search conducted at the premises led to the recovery of an automatic pump-action gun used in the ransom videos.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, commended the operatives for their painstaking investigation and professionalism in the timely unraveling of the elaborate deception. He warned that the Command treats every reported kidnapping incident with the utmost seriousness and deploys all available resources to ensure victims are rescued and perpetrators brought to justice. He further cautioned members of the public against engaging in false kidnapping schemes, stressing that such acts not only constitute serious criminal offences but also divert critical security resources from genuine victims of crime.
Members of the public are therefore advised to promptly report suspicious incidents to law enforcement authorities and refrain from taking actions capable of causing fear of crime.

Many motorists in Nigeria assume that once they are stopped by FRSC officials, the quickest solution is to "settle" the matter on the spot. In some cases, people part with ₦50,000, ₦100,000, or even more.
But that's not how the law works.
Traffic violations come with officially approved fines and every driver should be aware of them. Some examples include:
Driving without a valid driver's licence — ₦10,000
Vehicle producing excessive smoke — ₦5,000
No fire extinguisher in the vehicle — ₦3,000
Using a mobile phone while driving — ₦4,000
Driving without fastening a seat belt — ₦2,000
Exceeding the speed limit — ₦5,000
Most importantly, these fines are not meant to be handed directly to any FRSC officer on the roadside. Payments should be made through the government's approved channels.
If you're stopped for a traffic offence, ask the officer to state the offence, confirm the official penalty and follow the proper payment process.
Being informed about your rights and responsibilities can save you money and help promote accountability on our roads.

Private universities in Nigeria have grown significantly over the last two decades, expanding from a handful of institutions to over 160 licensed universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).
While private universities have always been more expensive compared with government-owned institutions, recent economic developments worsened by inflation and forex volatility have seen their fees go up even higher, and far beyond the reach of an average Nigerian parent.
For the 2025/2026 academic session, tuition fees across private universities range from about N525,000 to N11.99 million per session, depending on the institution and programme.
Here are the Top 10 most expensive private universities in Nigeria for 2025/2026.
