KENYAN NATIONAL IN COURT FOR ALLEGED RAPE AND SEXUAL GROOMING OF SCHOOL LEARNERS

A 44-year-old Kenyan national appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrates’ Court on two counts of rape and two counts of sexual grooming.

The identity of the accused is being withheld to protect the identities of the child complainants and to prevent secondary victimisation.

It is alleged that from 2022, the accused recruited learners from a local school and took them to his rented room in town. He allegedly filmed the children naked, gave them money and compelled them to perform sexual acts on him under the pretence that they would be given cellphones.

The matter came to light after the victims were allegedly instructed to recruit other learners from the same school, resulting in the information being disclosed at the school. The matter was subsequently reported to the police, and the accused was arrested.

The State is opposing his release on bail. The matter was postponed to 23 September 2026 for the accused to obtain legal representation and for further investigations. He remains in custody.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) views allegations of sexual offences against children in a serious light and will prioritise the prosecution of this matter, taking into account the vulnerability of the complainants.

It Ended In Tears For a 44-year-old SAPS Sergeant Who Was Allegedly Involved In Diseal Truck Hijacking in Bethal After He Was Arrested By His Own Colleagues

A 44-year-old police sergeant attached to the Secunda Flying Squad has been arrested in connection with the alleged hijacking of a diesel truck in Bethal, Mpumalanga. Members of the SAPS Organised Crime Investigation Unit arrested the sergeant on Friday, 4 September 2026, following an investigation into the May incident.

The diesel truck was hijacked in Bethal on 2 May 2026, after which the case was escalated to the Mpumalanga Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit. Investigators worked on the case and arrested four suspects in July 2026 as part of efforts to establish who was involved in the hijacking.

Further investigations allegedly revealed that a police officer may have been involved in planning the hijacking. A warrant of arrest was subsequently issued against the sergeant and was successfully executed by Organised Crime Investigation members on Friday. He is expected to appear before the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 September 2026.

Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise welcomed the breakthrough, saying the arrest showed that SAPS acted without fear or favour. He said criminality within the ranks would not be tolerated and that officers involved in corrupt activities would face action. The sergeant remains in custody pending his court appearance.

A 25-year-old suspect is due to appear before the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 4 September 2026, after he was arrested by the Provincial Drugs and Firearms Unit on Thursday, 3 September 2026, in Overport for dealing in drugs. The suspect was found with 400 pieces of rock cocaine, as well as 400 capsules of heroin, with an estimated street value of R36 000.00.

In another operation conducted by the same team in Phoenix, they recovered 178 bottles of various cough mixtures, 370 zip-lock packets of dagga and a further 2.5 kilograms of dagga, with an estimated street value of R46 000.00.
