Years ago, my husband, our Hopkins-area bird guide Charlton Castillo, and I spotted a spectacled owl high up in the trees by the ranger station of the Mayflower Bocawina National Park in Belize. Rainy day hikes are perfect for spotting birds sheltering in 🌳 canopies.

One of my favorite activities on the reef is to dive down to look for interesting life in caves formed under coral reefs in daytime. Usually it's napping nurse sharks and lobsters. Moray eels prefer smaller crevices.

A bare-throated tiger heron, true to its namesake, is a very versatile and opportunistic hunter. Predation behavior in Mayflower Bocawina park, a tropical evergreen broadleaf and lowland hill forest in Belize.

I've also decided to start posting photos I've taken of marine biodiversity, like this filefish guarding its nest on the reef off Roatán, Honduras. The reef system is very fragile.

I've decided to start posting my passion for birdwatching on X. I have thousands of photos of birds--quite a backlog going back years. This one is a #CollaredAracari from Belize. They love figs, papayas, and can be found near easy food sources like farms and birdwatching lodges.

I welcome the announcement of a deal to secure a ceasefire & hostage release in Gaza.

I commend the mediators — Egypt, Qatar & the USA — for their dedicated efforts in brokering this deal.

I call on all to uphold their commitments & ensure that this deal is fully implemented.

From the outset of the violence, I have called for an immediate ceasefire & the immediate & unconditional release of all hostages.

Our priority must be to ease the tremendous suffering caused by this conflict. I call on all to facilitate the rapid, unhindered & safe humanitarian relief for all civilians in need. From our side, we will do whatever is humanly possible, aware of the serious challenges that we will be facing.

I urge the parties and relevant partners to seize this opportunity to establish a credible political path to a better future for Palestinians, Israelis & the broader region. Ending the occupation & achieving a negotiated two-state solution, with Israel & Palestine living side by side in peace & security, in line with international law, relevant UN resolutions, and previous agreements remain an urgent priority. Only through a viable two-state solution can the aspirations of both peoples be fulfilled.
