@GeoTales_@volcaholic1 Unfortunately yes. They involve violent far-right rioters who are being organised online. There are usually only 100-150 in each riot but since the UK police are a little too gentle the rioters keep going. BBC news website will give you more information.
@YvetteCooperMP You need to do more NOW. Give the police special powers to ban assembly and authorise force to enforce it. Give them the kit (rubber bullets, teargas) to suppress these riots at minimal risk to themselves. Shut down social media networks and the accounts fanning this.
@bmay Nobody got 5 years for a zoom meeting about "climate change". Honestly if you are going to peddle this sort of misinformation you are no better than the far-right pushing lies about migrants.
@FoxtonRox @London_W4 Miles away from that. The Grenadier, Wilton Row, Belgravia, former officers mess of a Guards Regiment, said to be haunted by the ghost of an officer beaten to death for failing to settle a gambling debt. The banknotes are pinned there by customers to pay off his debt.
@WW2TV You have zero chance of getting a reply in July and August as they are short-staffed with annual holidays. Chuck in the Olympics with many Paris offices encouraged to close for the duration and you are shouting into a void. Also IME the French rarely respond to unsolicited emails
@drhingram Are you suggesting that the far-right groups who attacked a local racial minority and the police and committed multiple criminal offences are just "the pissed-off public"? Seems an interesting take.
@jbrdtrd @ariehkovler Well the BBC had running commentary from a golf commentator who had no clue what was going on, would not shut up and seemed to be under the impression that it was his job to be "ironic". It was dire.
@JonnElledge It gets more confusing when you realise that the next two hosts of the games come at the end, despite appearing at "a" and "e" in the French alphabet.
@johnsweeneyroar And if you had cycled past some bars in many foreign countries that day you would have heard "WTF?" in multiple languages. Many of the cultural references in the 2012 ceremony were completely lost on non-Brits. France did it differently but they did it just as well.
@CathyCostain The mystery person carrying the torch was based on the Assassin's Creed character (computer game made by French company). No and yes. She was terrific. The whole thing was ace apart from the shonky BBC commentary and the moaning Brits on Twitter.
@sturdyAlex Agreed. It's been amazing (people forget the 2012 ceremony was patchy and baffling for foreigners) but the BBC commentary has been sub Alan Partridge, genuinely bad π
@historical_kate ??? What did you expect? Men in stripey jumpers on bicycles? I think it's ace and hats off to the performers for doing that in the pouring rain.
@APHClarkson As I wandered through the City of London this Tuesday I noticed (a) huge amounts of office building/refurb and (b) many open-plan offices with between 20-30% occupancy of workstations. Ok it's the school holidays but even so, it does look like some fingers will soon be burnt.
@Josephvsss@WW2Facts Yeah this claim is absolute nonsense. The Soviets certainly killed (and/or allowed to die from neglect) hundreds of thousands of German POWs but the Western Allies looked after POWs in accordance with the Geneva Convention.
@RoryStewartUK The only excitement would have been amongst journalists and podcast peddlers. All that matters is who can beat Trump, all the rest is irrelevant.
@ariehkovler Well I am Gen X and I got caned. It was also pretty routine to have to dodge board rubbers lobbed at your head by irate teachers. All pretty standard in the 70s and mid 80s. I think your timeline may be out a little.
