When Xherdan Shaqiri played for Switzerland in the 2018 World Cup, the Swiss flag was stitched onto the heel of his left boot and the Kosovo flag was stitched to his right boot.
It highlighted a heartbreaking story about his upbringing:
๐จ๐ญ๐ฝ๐ฐ "I don't have both flags because of politics or anything like that. But because the flags tell the story of my life," he told back then. Shaqiri was just four years old when his family fled their home in Gjilan during the Kosovo war. They settled in the Swiss village of Augst, near Basel, over 1,000 miles away.โ
๐ฃ๏ธ "My family did not have much," Shaqiri said. "My uncle's house burned down and our house was left standing but everything had been stolen or broken and the walls were sprayed. I am really glad that we found in Switzerland a safe country where we could live our lives in peace."
The most fair play scene you'll see today. ๐๐

I canโt forget todayโs greeting with my 3.5 year-old niece, who said to me: โIโm sorry Diti that weโre leaving you alone, but we have to go,โ with her eyes full of tears!
