Reminds me of the story of Toni Nadal, Rafa Nadal’s uncle. Family can really play a huge part in the life of your child.

He started training his nephew in Tennis from the age of 4. The man was so disciplined that he didn’t care if Rafa was a child, he’ll drill the hell out of him. Rafa would go home and cry.

His mother had thoughts of stopping him from going to train, because she didn’t like that her young child was being drilled that way. Rafa also became tough that he didn’t want his mum to interfere😅

In fact, the reason why Rafa Nadal was so good on clay court was primarily because Mallorca’s courts were clay, and his uncle also preferred it rather than taking him to hard courts. His uncle wanted him to be dirty since he was young. That would show that he’s worked hard when you can see the dirts all over you. He said he wanted his socks to be dirty.

There were times he would shout at a 13 year old Rafa Nadal, drill him to breaking point. After training in a group, every other kid would go home, he would make Rafa sweep the courts😅.

In fact, during training in the heat, he does not let Rafa drink water in the first hour. No water. You must suffer.

This was part of the mind games, he would let Rafa almost win training games, and then start beating him, with the mindset that he must stay locked in, he was simply preparing Rafa Nadal for the big stages.

The funny part is that Rafa Nadal once said, playing matches is easier than training with his uncle 😂

Together, they went on to win 16 grand slams. 10 French Opens, 2 Wimbledons, 3 US opens, 1 Australian Open. Then his uncle left the team. Rafa won 6 titles afterwards to make up his 22 grand slams.

Please watch Nadal’s documentary if you haven’t. These are the things I spend my time watching. Very interesting documentary. It’s also one that shows how a family member can play a huge role in the life of your child, hence, the relation to this tweet.
