Investigation Exposes How Zimbabwe Poultry Farmers Are Allegedly Feeding their Chickens HIV Antiretroviral Drugs
An investigation has uncovered the illegal use of human antiretroviral (ARV) medicines in Zimbabwe's poultry industry, where some broiler farmers are reportedly mixing the drugs into chicken feed and drinking water. The practice is allegedly aimed at reducing bird deaths, speeding up growth, and increasing profits, raising concerns about food safety and public health.
The investigation by the Southern Africa Accountability Journalism Project found that some farmers obtain ARVs through illegal channels before adding them to poultry feed. One farmer claimed the practice reduced flock losses and shortened the broiler production cycle from six weeks to four weeks. Zimbabwe's Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act prohibits the use of medicines intended for humans in food-producing animals without proper authorisation.
Experts interviewed during the investigation warned that residues of antiretroviral medicines in poultry products could pose risks to consumers, although there is no direct evidence that eating such chicken reduces the effectiveness of HIV treatment. The report also noted similar practices previously documented in Tanzania and Uganda, where researchers detected ARV residues in poultry feed, meat, and animal tissues, while no scientific studies have shown the drugs improve broiler growth.
The investigation further highlighted concerns over antimicrobial resistance caused by the misuse of human medicines in livestock, with the World Health Organization identifying antimicrobial misuse as a major global health threat. Researchers and veterinary professionals also warned that diverting ARVs from patients into illegal markets could place additional pressure on Zimbabwe's HIV treatment programme, prompting calls for stronger regulation, stricter enforcement, and greater awareness among poultry producers.
Undocumented Mozambican Woman Destroys Her Own Hair Salon in Melmoth After Her R100,000 Compensation Demand Was Rejected When She Was Told to Leave
An undocumented Mozambican woman, reportedly identified as Mhlana in some accounts, destroyed her own hair salon in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, after members of the community and local business forum representatives confronted her and told her to shut down and leave. The dispute ended with her damaging equipment, furniture, mirrors, and fittings inside the business.
According to widely shared videos and reports, the woman refused to leave immediately and demanded R100,000 in compensation for her business and equipment before vacating the premises. She later reduced the amount to R50,000, but no agreement was reached. Frustrated by the situation, she began smashing mirrors, overturning chairs and cabinets, and damaging lights and other property inside the salon.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the woman, dressed in a red-and-white patterned outfit, destroying the contents of the salon while bystanders watched. She shouted that nobody else would benefit from what she had built. The incident unfolded amid ongoing tensions involving undocumented foreign nationals, foreign-owned businesses, and the activities of the March and March Movement in KwaZulu-Natal.
Lt-Gen Sindile Mfazi’s death is now being treated as a murder investigation.
The former DNC died in July 2021, initially thought to be from Covid-19 complications.
What we know so far:
- J51 warrants (search and seizure) executed by the SAPS Cold Case Unit and STF today
- Two offices and two residential units in Pretoria and surrounds targeted
- Many electronic devices seized
- One person currently being questioned
- “High profile” individuals linked to murder (which may include police officers)
- Police not confirming a motive or whether Mfazi’s death was related to the serious matters under investigation.
Details on @eNCA
Who was Lt.Gen Mfazi?
Lieutenant-General Sindile Christopher "Pitso" Mfazi was a highly decorated South African law enforcement official who served as the Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection for the South African Police Service (SAPS).
He passed away on 8 July 2021 at the age of 59.
While his death was officially reported at the time as being caused by Covid-19 complications, subsequent forensic developments and parliamentary testimonies have firmly pointed toward a fatal poisoning and targeted assassination linked to his high-level corruption investigations.
In July 2021, SAPS management announced that Mfazi died of Covid-19.
Suspicious of foul play, his family secured a court order to exhume his body for an independent forensic and toxicology analysis.
The independent results conclusively revealed that Mfazi had been poisoned with liquid casting resin (a synthetic industrial chemical), which caused him to choke to death.
According to testimony presented by whistleblowers and former intelligence officers to Parliament's ad hoc committee, Mfazi was assassinated because he was actively probing massive multi-billion rand corruption networks.
He was investigating a coordinated siphoning operation involving a R1.6 billion Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)procurement fraud ring operating directly out of SAPS headquarters.
The Mfazi Foundation has noted that Mfazi was a lead investigator reviewing the controversial Phala Phala farm burglary matter and the alleged misuse of SAPS Crime Intelligence funds.
Before his death, Mfazi reportedly confided in close intelligence analysts that he considered SAPS national headquarters to be an active, compromised "crime scene".
Whistleblowers testified that while Mfazi’s body was still upstairs in his house on the night of his death, senior police officials from SAPS national head office arrived at his home to seize and remove his investigative files before his widow could arrive.
The Mfazi family and foundation have publically called on former Crime Intelligence heads to disclose and return the missing dossier of investigative records taken from his estate.
Over 15,000 citizens have signed a petition backed by the family calling on the Speaker of Parliament for a formal transparent inquiry into the state’s failure to make a breakthrough.

I'm pleading with all communities in our country to go harder on Somalis, Ethiopians, Pakistanis, Nigerians, and Bangladeshis in our townships. They're very rude, stubborn, and arrogant; they say they are prepared to fight us in our own communities, which means they aren't going anywhere. #ABAHAMBE
#sapsFS [WANTED RAPE ACCUSED FINALLY ARRESTED AFTER EVADING SENTENCING FOR ALMOST 12 YEARS]
A 36-year-old rape accused, Kenneth Lepota of Tseseng Village in Qwaqwa, has finally been arrested after evading sentencing for nearly 12 years.
Lepota was convicted of rape together with two co-accused in 2014 but failed to appear in court for sentencing and had been on the run ever since. One of his co-accused, Morena Mokoena, is currently serving a life sentence for the offence, while the third accused passed away before sentencing.
On 6 April 2011, at approximately 00:45, a 26-year-old woman from Tseseng Village was walking home from a local tavern with a friend when they were confronted by three men. The suspects forcefully grabbed the victim, dragged her into nearby bushes, and raped her. The victim was able to identify all three perpetrators.
The suspects were subsequently arrested, prosecuted, and convicted of rape in 2014 at the Tseseng Magistrate's Court. They were released on bail pending sentencing.
Before sentencing could take place, one of the accused died. Morena Mokoena was later sentenced to life imprisonment, while Kenneth Lepota absconded and remained in hiding after failing to appear in court for sentencing.
Police continued searching for Lepota over the years. On Friday, 3 July 2026, a community member spotted him after he returned to the village and alerted the investigating officer. He was immediately arrested.
Kenneth Lepota is expected to appear before the Tseseng Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, for sentencing following his conviction on the charge of rape.
The #SAPS Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, commended the community member for providing valuable information that led to the arrest.
"The public remains the eyes and ears of the police. This arrest demonstrates the importance of community cooperation in ensuring that offenders are brought to justice, regardless of how much time has passed. We hope this development will bring a measure of closure to the victim and her family," said Lt Gen Lesia.
